V-mount intercooler
 

hey guys just doing some recon for a intercooler set up. Has anyone heard anything about the rotary works v-mount it looks to a good kit and it’s a great price compared to to other kits on the market I don’t want to buy a cheep kit but every penny counts with these cars any input is greatly appreciated thanks

Hi, I was looking in to that same kit but, my mechanic said don't bring that here...LOL. he specialize in JDM and high end European cars. He said it's better to invest more now than later.

I'm running a diy v-mount with a Koyo rad and a cheap ebay intercooler. It works great! I don't see the point of spending $3500 for a Greddy v-mount kit when a $500 diy kit (or rotary works) will perform 99% as well.

Is it better on V mount H_M? What was the advantage? I used lots of eBay and cheaper parts before. I’m sure it works fine
im just afraid of breaking down and getting stuck somewhere.

Ok great thank you guys so much that’s what I’m looking for I agree I don’t see the point because it seems that rotary works is not some cheep knock off brand. So the 3500 for the GReddy seems a little much and if the other kit works and is reliable most people would go with the cheaper kit unless you just wanted the name imo

If it's the rotary works FD v-mount kit I believe it is, it is the same as the CX racing kit. They even use the same pictures.

I'm not knocking it because I will probably give it a try next year. I will be running it with water/meth, and my Greddy BOV so we shall see.

I use their v mount radiator with much success. It's great. I can't comment on the intercooler as I'm using a greddy front mount modded for vmount. When it comes to things like this, it's no so bad to go with "generic" brand stuff. There's no much engineering that goes into an intercooler outside mounting points. You'll be fine the rotary works kit. Just be prepared to deal with parts that don't fit like they should and brackets that don't line up with anything. Don't expect a perfect kit and be ready to mod it out of the box

I have the Rotary Extreme kit and it is just "ok". My advice is to get the biggest, most efficient core possible and go from there.

I'm surprised to hear the Rotary Extreme kit is just Ok. That was THE KIT to have for the longest, at least until now with the Greddy kit. I have a buddy who runs the Rotary works and its actually a nice kit once fitted. But as mentioned, be prepared to spend some extra time on the install. A dremel and a tungsten carbide bit are your friend.

One thing to remember with a V Mount is that it is large and the core and piping shape/layout become the focal point for your engine bay. So in my opinion, you better get one you like the look of!

(funnily enough that's why I got the RE Amemiya one vs the Greddy even though it cost more.......I love the curvy pipes and the symmetry!)

Also, don't forget that the Greddy Kit also includes ducting and intake pipes/filters. It is a much more complete kit, hence the price. Regarding pricing, you can get it MUCH cheaper direct from Japan, it's only $2,500 here:

For those that are going with with cheaper 'ebay' cores (and I'm not judging here, sometimes you don't need to go whole hog) be aware that there can be very significant differences internally when comparing a known name brand cores to others.

As for Intercooler companies, based on PERSONAL experience I can suggest Bell Intercoolers, CSF Radiators, and Treadstone. I wouldn't bother downsizing the intercooler with a Japanese design.

Can anyone speak to the efficiency of the usual v mount intercooler suspects?

Go custom and big. Don't buy an off the shelf kit and you'll be a happier person.

Sounds harder to find someone who can build something quality. I’m in LA. Any recommendations? Im about to pull the trigger on an hks vmount untill I find a better option.

Rad Industries, Dan Burkett is right there. He's great. Very few people I'd trust on my car, he's one of them. LA is the hub of this industry, so you have no excuses.

I've owned a TON of aftermarket parts and "kits" for these cars, most of which are little more than home-brewed junk. The Greddy V-Mount is honestly the nicest, ground-up designed, best thought out, most complete and perfectly fitting kit of any kind I've ever had. Its more like what friends with Porsches or GTRs get (and expect) when they get kits for their cars. It was actually satisfying to install.

I went custom on my CWR replica SMIC, and used Bell Intercoolers to make it custom (you pic a core, and send them end tank drawing with dimensions, and they build it), and the core was of super high quality. Much greater fin density than the original Spearco based CWR if you're going to go that route, but having tried many times (including designing an entire custom v-mount/radiator setup I never had made), I wouldn't bother recreating something that someone has already made nicely.

Its funny though, over the years, the intercooler is consistently the area where it seems the most people don't want to buy whatever the best kit is at the time and DIY it... I've seen so many cobbled up setups (and a few really sweet ones).

Going "big" is all very well and good. I'd maybe go smaller for a decent intake if we're talking efficiency and avoid murdering angels, with intakes behind heat exchangers....which is all too common in the rotary world. :)

There's always room to duct that to the front, people are just lazy.

So hey guys been along time since I asked the question that started this thread but I did end up pulling the trigger on the kit and guess what to my surprise it's a great kit. And I say that In the way of efficiency works amazing but is a little less than bolt on hahah!

Glad it worked well for you. The problem with these 'kits' is that they leave a whole lot to be desired with regards to proper ducting and finish work so people home brew their own solutions - which is great - but then not all post kit solutions are made equal which leads to issues when comparisons etc and where they could use work/development.
