Turbos 101?
 

Hey all,

I'm fairly new to turbos, so don't really understand them all that well. There anyone that can give a little Turbos 101 lesson? I understand the whole compresser thing, but stuff like what's a blow off valve for, or a wastegate... how you dial in how much boost you want, what the difference between T04S or a T61 turbo is.

wastegate lets out excessive boost (exhaust) before it enters your exhaust side of your turbo

BOV (blow off valve) goes on the clean air side (compressor) side of the turbo and is kinda like a wastegate, but it protects your turbo from backpressure ( i think) and from surges under decelleration and other things like that when you get sudden surges that could hurt your turbo. BOVs arent necessary but will protect your turbo and help it last longer

the BOV usually has a spring that lets out whatever is over the boost rating of the spring. Like a 11psi spring.

And you can control them through electronics, or a valve ( i think)
I think the electronic ones work on solenoids and vacuum lines but im not positive on that.

T04S and T61 are the name of the turbo, like different companies have different name/size ratings. Usually the name will tell you the size of i forget what part of the turbo
