turbonetic 62-1 any good?
Hi I have been looking at going single turbo on my FD3 and was planning to get a Holset.. However a tubonetics turbo has been offered to me.. it is the 62-1 0.96A/R. It is presumeably an older version as it does not have the ceramic roller bearings in it? and looks a little different. Will this be any good on my rotary and what bhp is it good for?? I am on stock ports currently but wil have plenty of fuel to offer it! What boost is this turbo capable of running?

Am I correct in reading that there are two compressor sizes and two exhaust sizes options on this turbo? an A/R.63 and A/R .96?? Which are you runnning? Are you able to post a pic of your turbo for me to compare to the one I am looking at please? Thank you Lee |
i'm going to be running a T62-1 w/ .96 a/r. That turbo is available in a variety of exhaust A/Rs, but the .96 isn't available in divided housing.
Give me a few more weeks and I'll give you more info on how well it does on my car =] |

My advice is to never go below a .81 a/r turbine housing.

I guessed the A/R 0.96 housing is the one required for the rotary. wondered if visually there is a noticable difference in the housing size so I can be sure I am getting the right one? or will if have something stamped into the housing? Is the Hi Fi compressor no good then?? I reckon it might be that? the inlet looks quite small compared to the one pictured on the turbonetic website. I can try and get a pic a post it up later.

Turbonetics makes turbos. For the money you're spending you would wiser to get yourself a GARRETT TURBO GT35R, 84 TRIM, 1.06 A/R. This system uses newer and better turbine technology. This one is good for 500hp. Please do not support old technology.

The 62-1 i have is a .96 ar.
It has a 4'' inlet and a 3'' band clamp exhaust! And as for old tech. i guess it is but 10.8 1/4 and 10.5 comeing without going above 500 h/p suites me fine! Whats your track time?:scratch: |
Why would you want to use "OLD" proven technology. That just doesn't make sense. The 62-1 should outflow a GT35 at lower pressures.

I agree partly that this 'old' technology did us just fine before the new stuff came along! anyhow. I am looking at this unit as it has come up cheap and has hardly been used!. Here are a couple of pics of the unit. any ideas on what size she looks like as I am not getting an answers back yet! Also is that an on-cenre type housing I see? Looks to be an on-center T4 housing..somewhere in the 0.8X A/R range.
On-center isn't as efficient as a tang (tangential) housing and it will sit different on the manifold as a result. By sit different, I mean stick further away from the mani....but depending on the manifold setup it could fit. RX-7 engine bays have a pretty good real estate in the turbo area. |
the turbine housing A/R should be cast into the housing... look inside the manifold flange area, you may need to clean off the carbon build up

I used an on-center housing on my brother's car and I regret it :(
You can, however, buy a new tang housing--- divided or undivided and in different a/r's usually for around $150. Just make sure that it's for the correct trim wheel that this turbo has. |
Sounds like it will be better to give it a miss! I thought it looked like an on centre!!
