Tuning my car, hitting a wall at 10 psi and up.

im in the process of tuning the fd right now and it been going pretty smooth until now. when i am under 8 psi or so it feels really good and strong and as soon as i hit 10 psi or greater i can feel the car being held back. AFR's were at about 10.2 to 10.8 at 10 psi. could being to rich cause this or is it in my timing map. mods are streetport, holset WH1E, 550 and 1600 injectors and supporting mods. thanks in advance guys.

Do you have an aftermarket ignition system, specificly the HKS twin power? If yes, if seen several problems with this controller failing, it results in poor startup and misfiring under boost. Easy way to check is the LED on the box should be flashing at a pace with the rpm of the engine, if the LED is not on or flashes intermitently its probly bad. What EMS do you use?

catch-22 04-07-09 11:08 PM

PFC and no i dont have a twin power, but the car is not breaking up at all its just super slow like someone is pushing it back when i approach 10 psi.

siguy2k 04-07-09 11:10 PM

What kinda timing are you running? Split?

catch-22 04-08-09 09:58 AM

various split it doesnt run for shit if i set the split all the same. im running the timing off one of chuck westbrooks maps for a gt35r. ill post it on here in just a little bit so you guys can have a look.

catch-22 04-08-09 10:28 AM

here the leading timing. Sorry for the bad quality.

Your timing map looks pretty bad if you ask me. Im no expert on it but i would try and smooth it out. I doubt if thats your problem though.

arghx 04-08-09 11:00 AM

have you pressure tested for boost leaks?

catch-22 04-08-09 02:06 PM

no boost leaks, hooked it up to a pvc cap that i had and pressurized it.

catch-22 04-08-09 05:28 PM

So where abouts would the problems be in the timing map.

rx72c 04-08-09 05:34 PM

timing map dosnt look to bad.

I reckon your ignition is crapping it self. hence why it slows down.

Show us your fuel map.

10.2-10.8 is too rich for 10psi.
Dial it back to 11.3-11.5.

catch-22 04-08-09 05:40 PM

ok sweet im not at home now when i get back ill throw my fuel map up on here.

rx72c 04-08-09 06:45 PM

Go take it out and dial back some fuel out of the 10psi map. Should come alive.

catch-22 04-08-09 10:38 PM

ok ill give that a try thanks alot!

catch-22 04-08-09 10:43 PM

here the fuel map for reference.

I agree those afr's are way too rich for 10 psi. Mid to high 11's for afr's up to 10 psi and low 11's up to 15 psi.

alright thanks guys, ill give that a try.

Bizall 04-11-09 01:26 AM

Any updates?

powernut 04-11-09 12:37 PM

juses this looks a little too techical for me ,,, but keep at it , things will work for the best

Dudemaaanownsanrx7 04-11-09 12:51 PM

This is the first time I've actually looked at the timing map, as before I was replying from my cell phone and couldn't see it. Timing looks alright to me. Just some weird stuff going on in the P6 - P8 area in low RPMs, I doubt it's even noticeable when driving, and its at low load so its not dangerous.

catch-22 04-12-09 06:08 PM

hey guys, take out some fuel is really working. every time i make a new run it feels better and better! thanks for the help. Dudemaaanownsanrx7 did the timing look a little advanced in the area you were taking about?

rx72c 04-12-09 06:35 PM

if anything the timing map were it counts looks alittle retarded. But thats fine. Dont play with it.

Just keep trimming your fuel.

Dudemaaanownsanrx7 04-12-09 10:53 PM

No it doesn't look too advanced, it just isn't smooth, but its in an area that would be very hard to hit, probably only by free revving. maybe not even then. It wouldn't have much if any effect on how the engine runs, it's more of a visual thing. I try to keep everything as smooth as possible so when I look at a map I'm not distracted by large differences in the timing. I use the color feature of the maps and it makes things stand out more.

Glad to hear the engine is happier with the reduced fuel. It should keep everything cleaner and get more life from your plugs not running so rich. What AFR's are you sitting at now?

catch-22 04-13-09 10:18 AM

well i had to go back to school today so i wont be able to play until next weekend but i got them down to about 11.2-5 at 10 psi. im going to continue when i get back on thursday and get a little closer to 15 psi slowly but surely. thanks for the help again guys.
