Thermal Protection
I am building a GT35R setup for my 1993 R1. I have ordered the a spec kit and had them ceramic coat the manifold, housing, and dp. I am interested in keeping the under hood temps under control, and would like input on what works. I have read many threads on blankets and heat shields but would like to know what brands and methods hold up over time and how much of a difference the mods make. My car is used for weekend driving and an occasional trip.
1. Turbo Blanket or Metal heat shield. Yes or No and what brand. 2. Adhesive backed foil to protect the fender well and A/C hoses. Does this stuff hold up? Pealing discoloration etc? 3. Turbo hoses. Fire sleeve or other? What length,what diameter, and which hoses need to be protected. My setup. I would say yes to everything, thats ALL on my list to buy/make. And which brand? Good question, but generally the more expensive it is, the better the quality (but not always!).
And how about a vented hood? I was thinking of getting one, seems like a good way to release heat from the engine bay. |
Yes to the vented hood. I think I have settled on the scoot style.

A quality thermal blanket works better than just you're typical bolt on heat shield( the ones that just bolt on the turbine housing).

If you want to be really "baller" you could get the gold foil stuff people are going ape shit over. stuff aint cheap though.

Thanks. Looks like a quality turbo blanket is a must, and a vented hood. Still looking for brands and sizes etc.

ATP looks to be the best, but requires you to send the whole system to them for one off fabrication. 2. Adhesive backed foil to protect the fender well and A/C hoses. Does this stuff hold up? Pealing discoloration etc? As long as the foil isn't touching your hig heat source and you careful on cleaning the engine bay it should hold up. Pressure washing is really not recommended. There two style's of fire sleeve the orange silicon style and the aluminized fiberglass fabric, orange stuff for proximity of high heat source, silver stuff for near high heat source. Thanks afgmoto for the info. That is an awesome looking engine bay. I think I will go with fire sleeve and split the sleeve for the AC lines.

i have the turbo blanket... it looks to be the same one that 7store sells...
and its a pretty good size, i would say one size fits most.. i think they have a T4 and T3 version |
DEI also makes fire sleeve in black.

Some Aluminum, and some household wall fiberglass with the paper backing pulled off.

I just bought some black DEI sleeve from summit in several different diameters. I also bought some of the aluminized cool tube for the AC and heater hoses.
