t3 good or bad

I have been reading for a few weeks now on this topic. It looks like some people are making good power and are happy with t3 based turbos. On the other hand there are people who say that t3 is too small. What is the general concensus on this?

um... maybe with a T3 based TURBINE, but any T3 compressor is much too small for a 13b.

ok this is what i am trying to get to, I will be the first one to say that I dont know much about the subject. I have been reading and seeing folks putting down 400 + on gt35 that from what I am able to understand are t3, please correct me if I am wrong. There are also the t3/t4 turbos. Which parts are the t3? I am guessing hot side and t4 cold.

I guess I should have specified that I am talking about the hotside more specific to t3/t4. How does a t3/t4 fair with the 13brew. I wish I could change the poll to reflect this o well.

Wrong, GT35R is not a t3 based turbo: meaning sharing any t3 turbo bits (compressor or turbine wheels). It's its' own turbo, as Garrett changed its entire way of turbo sizing and did away with a lot of options were there used to be families and sub families, theres simply a few options per specific turbo. The GT35R uses a T3 FOOT PRINT TURBINE ENTRANCE and SHOULD NOT EVER be confused with a t3 "hot side" just because of the bolt pattern. Its GT turbine is much larger and flows gobs more then even the largest t3 turbine wheels.

To sum up the "can I run a T3/T4 on my 13b?" thing, yes you can run it, but I don't recommend it because they are TOO SMALL and you can get more power and just as fast spool running an appropriet sized T4. Your engine will run hotter, your egt's will be higher and actually I don't know how long a turbo will survive on a decent port 13b running a puny T3 turbine. All that heat has got to take a toll on the turbine housing and CHRA/bearing/seals.

Thank you very much, this clears a lot of things for me.

I should clarify, the T3 turbine/ hot side will work ok if your looking at low power levels. But the low power levels can be had with a STOCK turbo or stock twin turbos. So I can't see why anyone would spend money/time/effort on swaping out turbo's to be stuck at the same power levels.

no problem, like I said earlier, I didnt understand that the gt35 was not a t3, all that I saw was the 2 options for the gt35 t3 or t4 hence me asking if t3 were ok for the 13brew, now that it has been explained I have a better understanding.

Either housing (T3 or T4 {although I would'nt go smaller then the 1.0X A/R for T3 sized})will work fine on the rotary.

Mike has it nailed T3 inlet is about all that is the same with a T3 turbo. Can you run a T3 35R sure. Is it the best solution no, run only the larger A/r.

Thanks guys for the info, just trying to learn here :)

i hope you dont fill ur fd up with cig ashes like your t2! :) How are you treating that FD anyways?

norbak1258 12-11-07 01:30 PM

it's doing ok, the stupid secondary turbo is not coming on, so I have to fix that crap. Trying to source out the parts for the 5 speed swap and things like that. All in all everything is good.
