To T-78 or not T-78, that is the quesiton

I'm going single. I really think I want a T-78. I want a turbo that makes phenomenal power, but also is streetable for daily driving. I'm wanting to have around 475 - 550 rwhp.

Is this the turbo for me? What do I need to know about all the ratios pertaining to exhaust, etc.??? Is there another turbo I should be considering?

Does a T-78 have a LOT of lag?? If so, is the end result worth it?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also, anyone with a T-78, I'd love to know the power you've derived with it https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm1.gif

Gordon, How much larger did you go than with the PFS street port ??? Is your port job also bigger than the usual KD street port ??? Thanks, Chris

If you can use irrigation type sprayers mate on your water injection you are gonna have a better lasting option i think. Injectors will rust! Try a spa pump switch that actuates when boost comes on and as for pressure regulation, im not really sure, maybe have numerous spray nozzles coming frmo the one pump, and depending on the amount of boost you run, the more nozzles that open, the more water you are spraying in.

Roy Johnson, Jr 05-28-01 11:27 AM

I have an aquamist system. I don't have it hooked up yet. My understanding from them is you want to install the nozzle closer to the intercooler outlet. This give the water/alcohol ample time to do its job...cool the intake charge. If you're spraying right at the throttlebody, that's not giving it enough time to do its job.

I hear of people running 22-25 psi on these single turbos. If your air/fuel is set fine as to reduce detonation, is this kind of boost ok on the apex seals? I'm running 2 mm 2 piece seals in my new engine (9,000 miles)?

Roy you don't want to go with a T-78 cause if you do I will be forced to do it too and I don't have the money right now. https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm21.gif

Out of curiosity does anyone know the characteristics and potential of the t88 against a t78 and its streetability?

gmonsen,

Is there a particular reason you want to put it there? You might want to call the place where you bought it and see what they think.

I just think it will do a better job cooling the intake charge if it's further down (closer to) the intercooler outlet.

Gordon:

Based on your mods, it looks like you do road racing. Do you race or do time trials? With your setup it seems like you should blow most everyone else away. Do you ever get passed? By what??

xtrme7 05-29-01 04:48 PM

gmonson- roy and I are friends but we live about 3hrs away form each other, when we get a chance we meet up every once in a while and I can't have him stomping my ass every time we do. https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm45.gif

ballitek 05-29-01 04:56 PM

as far as a t78 and making that power.
we have a car running a t78, and it makes 540 to the wheels and he drives the car everyday. of corse the boost controller is off everyday when driving to work and back, but it is deffinality possible.

ONO13B 05-29-01 08:14 PM

My eventual plan is to get a Garrett GT40 ball bearing turbo
For my purposes that seems to be the trick, an eventual 400hp at the tyres is that aim aswell on pump fuel (98 octane over here is the highest pump fuel) i will have a large front mount intercooler and water injection

xtrme7 05-29-01 08:48 PM

gmonson-I dont road race but I do alot of street racing. And I wish I would of went single but got too much money in this set up, I will have to wait a while but it will happen. Also I am originally Reading Pa. ever heard of it? Heres my signature

It's on its way !! I went ahead and purchased the T-78. I wasn't going to buy one this quick, but I feel like I got a good deal.

Can anyone tell me what the factory AR is on this thing? The place I bought it from said 17 cm??

Is there anything I need to know about this thing when it comes time to put it on? Where have problems occurred? Anything to know ahead of time?

Any help is appreciated.

Roy and Marshall you both make me sick. https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm8.gif

Marshall 05-31-01 12:26 AM

Roy,
Its an awesome kit, sounds like you have just about everything, but....The 1200cc's aren't going to cut it for 475-550 rwhp and I'm not totaly convinced of the PFC's abilities to handle massive hp. The learning curve is still pretty large with them and APexi could give a rats ass (or so its seems with there customer support). Details are sketchy as to whether it will handle 1600 cc injectors as well.

I'd set it up conservatively for 400-420 rwhp (15-17 psi) at first with the 1200s and PFC. Over 400 rwhp in a 2900 lb car is freakin scary as you will soon find out. 550 rwhp on a daily driven basis is goin to be pretty tricky (and also useless in anything but 4th and 5th gear). I'd ask Pluto (Steve Kan) about realistic pump gas hp goals.

Good luck! I just ordered the XS T04E kit, so maybe sometime we can meet up and see how they compare. https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm1.gif

Hey Marshall, keep us posted on the XS kit, I'm looking really hard at that kit myself, so I'm really interested as to how it turns out for you.

Just exactly how bad is the T-78 lag? Are you waiting for days for it to come on line? If you race from a dead stop will you always be playing catch up?

LOL! A dead stop with a T-78 and street tires...you might be able to tune an AVC-R to bring on less of a hit in the lower gears. But 1st and 2cnd will probably be useless without at least an r compound tire (marginal) or DOT slicks(better).

I rode in a T-78 Supra and the lag was not all that bad...a little hesitation then blast off.

Gmonson, how is your 1st gear traction on the street?

Stevil 06-01-01 03:34 PM

Roy,
I put my aquamist nozzle in the beginning of my IC pipe after it exits the IC. I went to an aluminum helo-weld place. they added a thick piece of alum on the pipe, plus tapped it and inserted my nozzle. All for $30. This is the closest place to place it after the IC. I am running twins, but will post results once all is tuned.

Just canceled the T-78 order. I'm getting too many conflicting opinions on this thing. I want to be comfortable with my purchase before spending that kind of money.

I wish someone could list the different turbos available and give listings of approx. max HP, description of the lag (excessive, minimal, like stock, etc.), price range of kit, additional items needed to support the turbo (in addition to what I currently have listed below), etc.,etc.

I would like anywhere between 400 - 450 rwhp. By the time I got done with the T-78, I would have spent over $6,000 (including turbo) just in parts, no labor.

There's gotta be a great kit that can give me this kind of power that will work with the mods I already have. I was paying $3,345 delivered on the T-78. What other kits are available in this range?

I just bought a T61 from machinehead. Two grand and he is paying shipping. Includes a wastegate and exhaust manifold. You can check it out on this site in Parts for sale. I can handle the rest. Could have done the exhaust myself but the price seemed good with it so WTF? It aint a T78 but it should have power in the right rpm range for me. I have no intetion of drag racing or turning 9 grand in my car. I am ordering the Haltech as soon as the Group buy guys decide who to order from. I have a project ahead of me huh?
I was hoping to have crispeed go over my motor (it was Pettit bridgeported and built 20,000 miles ago) but he did not return my calls so I guess he don't want any more work? I can understand that cause I don't need any more work now either. No hard feelings. I will probably just throw the motor back in as is once I repaint the engine bay and tidy it up a bit.

Roy, I am kinda surprised at your change of heart. Are you going to look for something more civil for the street?

Steve

I wouldn't give up on the T-78 so easily. The lag is not bad at all. It's true that 1st (and second if you run over 10lbs.) require feathering the throttle to avoid wheelspin. Anything over 4000rpm in first and the tach just jumps to 8000! It's wicked! The top end rush though is bloody amazing. Launching the car requires some practice but I found it easier to launch than my non-sequential setup was. I figure it's better to have too much power than not enough... An AVCR to control boost by gear wouldn't be a bad idea but it's quite costly. I don't regret going with the T-78 for a second. Maybe if you can get a test drive in one you might be swayed... https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/cwmsmilies/cwm4.gif
