switching to single
 

I've found 2 or 3 RX-7's i like with twin turbo's. When i do the switch from twin to single turbo can I just switch the turbo's them self?

What else is needed? Lets say i want a T4 or T66 turbo. What costs am i lookin at?

your looking at upwards of 5-6k to do the full swap not including labor or tuning... their is much more to it than just swapping out the stock turbos.

you forget that to support all that power you will need to upgrade vitualy everything.

cooling:
-intercooler
-radiator
-venter hood is a must in my opinion, the heat it will make will be horrible
-heatshield what needs to be
-etc

fuel delivery:
-fuel injectors
-fuel pump
-rail
-fuel lines (stock once are brittle and should be replaced anyway)
-etc

Exaust(pretty much your whole exaust, you dont want back pressure):
-single exaust manifold
-downpipe
-high flow cats, muffler, etc.

Intake:
-high flow filter would be nice, those get pricy

other:
-ecu
-TURBO!! $$$
-waste gate
-blow of valve
-boost controller
-gauges


+installation of all that
+tunning

start saving up your pennies. Personaly I recomend taking it one step at a time and work your way up. Upgrade everything before going single. Take care of evrything it will need, cooling, fuel, intake/exaust, computing, gauges, etc etc. Then when ready go single.

ya really an RX-7 is just not one of those cars you can just slap a big single on and drive away with... it takes time money and serious dedication. these arent supra's they need serious modifications and serious tuning to work properly. Also epion forgot you will probably need a ported motor with upgraded apex seals and possibly even dowel pinned while your in there. my best advice would be search the board, read, learn and you will get a better idea of what u need with time.

i gotta buddy in NY that has a turbo i forgot which it was but it is the same one the new wrx has only bigger. complete kit for 3,000 bucks.

you need alot of work, it isnt a quick 20 minute install of a turbo and nothing else. If you intend on going single youll need almost everything in the list above. Also if you think a complete kit includes, fuel injectors, pumps, ecu and the other things for $3k then you are sorely mistaken

sure there are turbo kits, COMPLETE kits for $3000. everyone is talking about supporting mods to run the $3000 "kit" without popping you motor....

I spent near 10k getting there with kit, cooling, fuel, exhaust and so on. Not to even mention the motor and porting which was almost another 5k.

Yeah not trying to put a damper on your plans man, but honestly going single is alot more involved than many people expect. Now if you are just talking about switching to Single because your Twins went out, you can order the single run low boost with an aftermarket computer, and you will have about 4500-5000 in it. But you will be making just a little more power than you did with the twins. Singles are weird and borderline disappointing at first in my opinion because they don't start to shine until you have everything else done, and you can crank the boost up reliably. Fuel, Ignition, IC, Exhaust, Clutch, RearEnd, Wheels and Tires to get it to hook, roll cage for the track, radiator, labor, tuning, then you all of a sudden go from being disappointed to wow this car is ridiculously fast. My personal opinion was that I liked my car much better when I had hardly any mods and ran a respectable 13.20@109. But then again that's just me. 20K later I'm hoping for 10.99@128. Was it worth it. Some say yes, I'm still debating.

Almost $6k.

Figuring all things being equal and that most other mods have been done before the point of actually doing the conversion, that's it. If you want to include the ECU, controller (or not(read PFC)), gauges, BOV and whatnot, then yeah, the cost will be higher. Not to mention labor unless you're gutsy enough to try it yourself.

35/40 kit is $3499
40R kit with 50mm wastegate is $3999

You can save some money (about $1000 or so) by building your own kit. But I wouldn't recommend it with alot of planning beforehand. I have built my TO4R kit with lots of good stuff for $2800 and could have done a TO4S for closer to $2500. Only problem is you don't have all the R&D that goes into the kits or the instructions and little things(oil lines, etc.)

But as everyone else said....It is gonna cost you alot more than just the turbo kit for it to run properly. The option I talked about will only save you a little in the long haul.

i dont think you can get it done properly for anything less then 10k, unless you do everything yourself and use a lot of used parts. If money is an issue, DO NOT GO SINGLE TURBO. You will only get stuck selling your car half converted for less then you want to sell it for. Ive seen it done so much before. Good luck man.

Im having it done right now!I got the XS engineering turbo street kit .With every thing I needed and labor,it cost me just about $9,800 plus+ im having them put a new mazda rebuilt engine in too,which cost me about 2,200.hope this helped!
