Single turbo reliablilty
Just wondering how reliable your single turbo setups are. Me and a friend(who has stuffed a big block chev in his first gen) got on the subject of my FD and how he was thinking that for the money invested into a good single setup with a rebuilt streetported engine compared to an LS1 conversion, that the V8 was a better option due to the reliablilty. So that leaves me with the burning questions....
What is your setup? How much time/mileage have you got to date on your single turbo setup? How much boost do you run ? What rwhp do you have? Not looking to start anything about the rotary powered/v8 powered debate, just need to know. I am trying to plan out some kind of power upgrade for my car. The downfall of the rotary is that I am an engine rebuilder but we do not rebuild rotaries, but I have some rotary guys who will assist me. The v8 buildup is right at my fingertips but I am having a little trouble seeing a v8 under the hood of my car, and I love that sound of a turbo spooled.... mmm mmm Thanks in advance. |

9600 miles 17psi don't know yet I walk C5's, haven't come across a C6 but I ain't scared. I beat an Yamaha R1 (80-130mph - see kills section), had him down shifting and all...probably couldn't ride too well, I haven't been on a bike that couldn't out run a car by twisting the throttle. *edit, and this is on the first rotary engine I've built, so I think you could learn. |
Well thats a little encouraging. What size is your turbo(if you dont mind) and how much power do you think you have?

1.00 A/R p-trim wheel 0.70 A/R 60-1 wheel similar to a T04S If I had to guess my rwhp, I'd say 360-380...why so low at 17psi, I'd guess weak engine and an IC that probably can't support 400rwhp, cfm-wise. I like the sleeper look...everything under the hood. I really have no idea, the car is faster than it has ever been and no one has pulled on me...now, autoX I get my ass handed to me, haha! Why run that much boost...because that's the max I'd push on pump gas and I can :cool:, and the car seems to like it. When I dyno, I'll see where the money spot is and tune it reliably to the best of my ability as far as timing is concerned. I ran around all weekend at 10psi and the car was sick fast for 10psi, but my EGT's were way higher than at 17psi...I'm guessing because the timing map I have, 10psi was just a passing point with aggressive timing to get to higher boost. If I'm not making sufficient gains at 17psi, I've got no problem dialing it back. I'm questing for a bulletproof 13B-REW. I don't think I'll do it this time around, but I've learned a lot since the build, and will do a few things different when the time comes. 10k miles @ 17psi on a 13B-REW isn't crucial, but none of my friends have done it, hahaha!! Biggest thing I will do different is cooling...v-mount (best of intake and coolant temps- get that hot air out of the engine bay), and a bigger oil cooler. BB turbo is a must for a no-low-end rotary, IMO. If you are talking V8 swap and the $$ involved, I think you'll be pleased with the REW and the 3 things I've noted I'd do different. Oh, I wish I would have wrapped my manifold too. It will be cheaper and less fab work involved. Once you buy the tools for rebuilding...it is pretty cheap to rebuild, unless you want new engine parts like I do for my next motor. good luck with your decision. |
That kind of hp is what I would be after. I dont think I would be able to get away with 17 psi on pump gas here as our prenium is only 91 octane... I believe you guys in all of the US can get 94 octane. It is available in Canada, just not where I live yet... apparently it is slowly on its way here however.
Your 3 things you would add to your program makes total sense. My car is a terd after it heats soaks, and I would love to go BB turbo... I want to have full boost as low as possible. I also obviously want keep my car rotary, but at the same time, I want it to be able to beat up competitive V8 cars. I think I would be very happy with a setup similar to yours .... as long as it lasts. You beat an R1? Even if the guy couldn't ride that well, they are still rearted fast.... Looking for some others to chime in on how many miles they have on there single turbo setup as well, with how much boost and approx. rwhp. |
I have cars around 4-5yrs on the same motor and turbo setup ranging anywhere from 400-450whp daily driven. Pay attention to the details and you can have one run very well. With a good build and a good tune you should have no problems with it lasting.

Nice pics dubulup! I like to see the polished stuff under the hood but yours has an sleeper look to it for sure... looks great! Someone would have to know these cars to tell that you have done substanial mods |
