single turbo how big is to big for a street car

how big is to big of a turbo for the street i dont mind some lag but i still whould like to put 500hp to the ground. any body with good luck in this dept let me no thanks jason.

Mid_KnightFD 11-30-01 11:14 AM

Go with the T-78, not to bad as far as lag, but anytime you want big HP your going to have to have a big turbo, so there is always going to be some lag, 500 is alot of HP, but you could get it with the T-78. good luck

Brad 11-30-01 04:55 PM

The statements "not too much lag" and "500 hp" are pretty much mutually exclusive.

It's all about your preference and driving style. There are people out there running a T88 (++++++++) and T51 (rotaryextreme) on the street. I personally do not think those are very "streetable" turbos. They make damn nice 500+ numbers...but the obvious sacrifice is low end power.

Other turbos like the RX6 and TD06 spool very quickly, make decent power, blah blah...just nowhere near 500 whp.

But I have an even better idea. Just throw a 20B with a Y2K and you will have low end torque and a lil bit of top end too!!

Mid_KnightFD 11-30-01 05:15 PM

Yeah, thats all fine and dandy, hell id do that to, but have you ever checked to see how much money it takes to have a 20b put in its a little pricey.

What...you don't have one of those trees that grows money in your front yard???

I would highly recommend getting one...

Those big hardwood trees are about as close as you can get.:)

Seriously though, the T-78 is pretty good on the lag side for a turbo capable of 500+ RWHP. Just make sure that you're in the right gear.;)

Actually, you only need a stem cell. ;)

I'm pretty sure in a few decades, biogenetic scientists are capable of creating a tree that sprouts leaves that look similar to some certain dollar bills. :D Heck, the U.S. Mint might use it for legal tender since it costs too much $$$ to invest in conterfeit measures in our current bills. With the money tree, each bill will have it's own genetic signature! Talk about the ultimate in conterfeit proof.

boostedyellow7 11-30-01 07:53 PM

t78 sounds like a good one then how about haltek or something else to tune the car better than my pms. thanks for all your guys is help.

A standalone ECU--Haltech, Wolf, TEC II, etc.--will do a better job than the PMS.

I had a T88 setup with a Power FC and it boosted pretty quick for such a big turbo, the car was daily driven and was completely streetable, I wouldn't consider it really big lag time, I know some guys with smaller single turbo setups that had more lag than I did, the Greddy turbos are known for spooling pretty quick because of the design of the turbine housing. Plus tuning has alot to do with lag, because if your A/F ratio and timing aren't proper you will get considerably more lag, just my 2cents. BTW I bought another T88 kit for my other RX7 cause I liked it so much.

Lag

Gentelmen, i hope you are all aware that lag can be somewhat controled with the exhaust manifold design...if you catz know about some thermodynamics and fluid mechanics you will see how it could be possible to reduce lag a bit. I am starting to do some more research so i can build my manifold.:p or.....maybe i'm talking crap let me know what you guys think.

What kind of porting did you have?

Rx7DoYLe 12-01-01 01:56 PM

Exactly what i mean when i say the manifold design , there should be some certian lenghts to tune with the A/R even materials used would help reduce lag trying to keep temps as high as possible until they get to the turbo...ceramic coating is good for that. Greddy makes some nice turbos when you get to the GT 30 and such due to the bearings doesn't take that much energy to get that puppy spinning. Just remember in the energy equation KE=1/2m(v*v). the faster you can get those velocity gasses pumping the faster you'll be boosting.

I think you should be talking to RICERACING.. he might be able to save you a few steps....;)

Street ported motor.

boostedyellow7 12-01-01 06:54 PM

does anybody have srs kkk turbo kit that put 544hp out.

SAGE 12-01-01 07:12 PM

If you wanna hook up some real power www.srx7.com get the stage 5 turbo that hooks up 680+hp

SAGE:D

boostedyellow7 12-01-01 07:44 PM

but that whould not be a very streetable turbo.

It must be a good port to spool that badboy.:)

ErnieT bought that kit.

boostedyellow7 12-01-01 09:03 PM

ya i just saw that so i sent him a email do you no how that is working out for him at all. i no that they like to put that turbo on porsche 944s and they have great luck with them.

spyfish007 12-02-01 01:40 AM

I thought ErnieT bought the smaller one .... also I remember there was BIG controversy over the power of the big SR kit-search the archives.

TuRbOfAsT87II 12-02-01 06:04 AM

T61?

ive heard some good things about the T61, or maybe even the level 6 frank series?!?! And a question too...im new to the rx7 and new to researching it, where could I get an upgraded ECU? or FCD? if i moderatly mod my car(~350+hp) would a standalone ECU with a FCD work or no?
Jeff
