Single Ball Bearing Turbo?

Hey, I was wondering if there was a single BB turbo out there. Anyone know of one or have any opinions on them at all?
Thanks

JoeD 12-03-01 01:59 AM

is the ball bearing turbo more reliable? I mean is there less chance to blow the turbo?

And is the Apexi turbo on rx7store the apexi RX6? Does Apexi makes any other kind of turbo for the RX-7?

thanks a lot

I seem to remember an ad for that turbo in sport compact car a while back. It was the RX6 kit and it was only 450 hp capable which is shit if you ask me, even for the street. I would want one that is capable of at least 550-600 hp. You could always just run a bit lower boost.

Well do you know of a single BB turbo that is capable of 550-600 hp?

The apex single turbo is an IHI made turbo. IHI is widely regarded as one of the better turbo manufacturers in the world.

the K27 (KKK - the TURBO brand). You can get it as a Blitz turbo kit and I think there's some mom and pop shop also putting these out for RX-7s. It's not a ball bearing turbo, but it has response that is only a bit laggier than the Apex kit and yes it's a very reliable turbo. The K27 flows enough for up to 700hp at boost levels within the turbo's efficiency range. This is what the turbo is capable of, what your engine is capable of isn't always the same figure. The same applies to all turbo and engine combos.

Well this is the sett up Im planning on running
https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/show...threadid=36510
I have the RX6 turbo listed there cause its the only BB turbo I could find at the time.
My friend did research and a report on turbo chargers and he told me to get a BB turbo because its more reliable, lasts longer, spools faster, and doesnt heat up as much as the others do, thats why Im lookin for a BB turbo.
Thanks

The apex kit is a great kit for the street what you saw was at 15lbs you can run it up to 18lbs and still be within its range.with a well prepped car you should easily see 450rwhp and still be a daily driver thats not shit, you find me one car thats truly a daily driver 6 or 700 hp and I will show you my ten foot cock. plus some people actually like a car that comes on boost before 4500rpm just in case traffic might require it.
If you want more power than that spray it, at least you'll still have lowend response.;)

what times should this Apex turbo make with a good driver?
low 11s?

with really good tuning, and an aggressively ported engine, low 11's will be attainable.

I have the RX-6 BB and that damn thing spools so quick ur balls will be in the trunk by the time u shift to second. My car breaks loose at 1st 2nd and 3rd gear... Thats why when i took the car to the track i hadno tracktion all i did is go side ways all the way down the track still doing flat 13's with tires spinning all the way down the track and still I had to let off the gas so i dont hit the wall. I get full goost at around 3-3500K and everytime i have a passenger all they can say is Holy Shit! and they turn white.. RX6 are good on the street but on the track u better make sure u have some nice slicks or drag radials cause i will gaurantee you will loose traction... Right now im pounding @17pnds i havent got it dynoed but i will be soon.. but me ima get a different setup soon from australia (thanks to Brad) its a twin ball bearing....

just my 2cents:D

Other options are the HKS GT series turbos, they are BB. But there are no specific FD kits available.

You can also get BB centers for garret based turbos.

BB does not make the turbos more reliable. Maintenace is even more important with BB turbos. You have to REALLY make sure that you change the oil and make sure you have a H20 line to it.

is the blitz k27 the same turbo kit offered by sr motorsports? and if so is it correct to assume they spool up as quick as a greedy t78 but will provide more rwhp @ whatever psi? i to was interested in a apex rx6 but if i can get the same results withe the kkk or t78 without pushing the turbo to its limit all the time i would rather go with those turbos. i just can't decide what would be good for me. i don't have all the money in the world so i want to get it close to right the first time as possible. i am looking at 450 rwhp @ 15lbs, and if ever i go to the track i want to be able to raise the boost and go for a consistent low 11 runs, which of the three turbos or another will work for me. i don't want a turbo that will reach full boost an 4500-5000 rpm (to much lag) but something decent in a kit (and i don't really think the xs kits are worth, omly because i have not seen one in person and in action).

any help is appreciated, luigi

I'd like to see the mods needed on any single turbo kit that will get 450rwhp at 15psi and still spool up at lower than 4500 rpms. I don't know of any.

erniet said his kkk spooled up at around 3800-4000, check out his mods. and most people with t78 says it spools up as fast as that turbo..

luigi-any help.

T-66, T-70, T-72, T-76, T-78, T-88 :D... pretty much any big turbo you can get from turbonetics or garrett. Garrett offers a true ball-bearing turbo (compressor, and turbine) as well, which the RX-6 and HKS twins are not (although the HKS twins are garrett turbos I believe). SW's supra made 804 RWHP on a ball-bearing T-70 and ran a 9.82 I believe.

erniet said his kkk spooled up at around 3800-4000
ErnieT isn't running a ball-bearing KKK is he? Cheuk in Soeul runs the RX-6 and makes 415 rwhp I believe... which is impressive for that turbo if you ask me. If you are considering the HKS twins series, you might as well go custom single ball-bearing setup anyways. I don't know the flow specs on the Supra kit, but I am willing to bet they aren't efficiently matched for an RX-7. You can always go custom twin setup as well, but look at all the haggle that Magnus is going through with his... and he's actually EXPERIENCED at building turbo setups ;)

wptrx7 12-06-01 04:47 PM

i'm not sure if you were answering my question or not, but i am convenced on going single, i don't want a twin setup because of cost.

The RX6 and HKS twins are true ball bearing turbos. The ones that you get form turbonetics are not. and yes the HKS turbos are garretts.
