setting up a 2 step/anti lag....
im looking to setup a 2 step launch control on my fd. from what i have searched all i can find is msd 6al with the 2 step switch. is that the only setup made for the fd? i have a power fc and currently have a hks twin power for ign.
heres a vid of what im looking for. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK4GP...eature=related |
There is an antilag option in the datalogit software, I've never tried it but I know it's there.
|
yea from what i understand the power fc uses fuel cut which is no good. im guessing the 2 step would work off all coils during ignition.
|
that's not a " Two-Step" that's Anti-lag. A "Two-Step" is just that, it sets a second, lower rev limiter that is normally engaged by your clutch i.e. what you get with the MSD. "Anti-lag" retards the timing so that the spark plugs don't fire until the exhaust valve is open, shooting a hot air charge directly to your turbine wheel (and makes for a nice fire show out of your tailpipe). "Anti-lag" gets your turbo VERY HOT, so I would not get one without an EGT gauge to make sure you don't cook your snail.

MSD released an updated version of the 6AL with a built in 2-step, it's called the MSD 6AL-2, creatively enough...
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-6421/ Most wire it so when the clutch is pushed you activate the 2-step and use a relay to cut power to the trailing coils, so the 2-step is only active on the leading coils. |
Crane also makes one, see my mods list and search my posts for info about it. Mine sounds good but doesn't shoot flames or sound like a machine gun like others you see on youtube

I use an MSD digital 6... still need a switch to kill the trailings..
|
wow great vids, but did that big old truck win?
|
If you do a youtube search for rx7 2 step, it sure seems like they do???

Like I said they are used interchangeably because they do very similar things, but they do it in two different ways, and each has it's own pro's and cons. |
2 step is a rev limiter set to where you launch the car and it wont bog or spin like crazy. Usually the sweet spot. depending ont he turbo, engine, and RPM you can build boost but not alot. video of two step: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyZ71xDmP1s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtocJVW2438 Anti-lag is a system that retards ignition timing and dumps fuel so basically you get spark while the exhaust valve is open creating a really hot charge going into the turbo. This will spool a turbo up really fast. Anti lag is also used in between shifts(not on everything) when you shift it will do the same process as above to keep the turbo spooled for the bext gear. this happens in between up/down shifts and de-accelleration. You mostly see the latter on WRC and serious race cars. Anti-lag is hard on turbos cause of the extreme heat but will hold up to it as long as you dont overdo it or do it wrong. You really dont need antilag unless your running a GT42R on a 4g63 but if i ran something like a GT35R or bigger i would use it. video of Anit-lag: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOnYA3N46kk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSNrrirCgJc rally style http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFVSs...eature=related |
I adjusted my fuel and timing maps to inject a lot more fuel and timing set to 0 in the area of the maps that are used when the 2 step is activated, it builds 10 psi in a second or two.
|
You can somewhat mitigate the effects of anti-lag by using an Iconel Steel turbine wheel. Some manufactures are offering them, and IMHO you should be using these on an RX7 anyway. Not saying it's bullet proof, but the melting point of the blades is substantially higher than standard wheels.

Full stand alones will also have if you swap out your PFC.
There is flat shift/anti-lag/2 step. They have different conditions to engage. Then you set the RPM the car will hold (Say you want to launch at 5k). Usually the 2 step is setup for below X speed enable (usually close to 0 mph) and then press clutch down and WOT the car. The computer retards the timing and adds fuel to build boost and attain the set RPM. Wonce you dump the clutch and start moving you dont' worry about it (0+mph). This is similar as anti lag as that is how it builds boost. Anti-lag does it when you shift and you seen/read most of that. Flat shift just allows you to hold the acc while u shift (computer drops/maintains rpms when WOT). |
Here is my msd 2-step on PFC. There is a nice write up on how to wire to clutch pedal on here. Works great. No anti lag!!

WOW, there is a lot of misinformation on this thread!
To the op, what you want it a 2-step. Go with the MSD boxes (on the leading at a minimum). MSDs "soft touch" rev limiter IMO is the best for a rotary. If it is setup correct it will blow flames like that. |
how are the msd boxes holding up with 550-600whp? any break up? from what it looks like im going to do is sell off my twin power and go with the msd setup. sk8 shoot me some info on how yours is setup. also any info on what is needed to relay out the trailings.
thanks to all for the replys. |
ALS is not simply 'dumping fuel and pulling back timing'.
proper anti-lag systems have either a throttle bypass or a direct port that introduces air into the exhaust manifold, as well as upping fuel during the closed throttle part of the map and retarding the ignition as much as possible. that's how the WRC cars implement it. not sure if anyone's tried to put a system like that on a rotary, be interesting to see if it could work. obviously it works well on a piston because the charge can be ignited with the exhaust port open, don't think you can do that with a rotary? ignition cut just means you've got unburnt fuel auto-igniting at some point in the exhaust. |

thanks to all for the replys. Read thru this thread. Mine is just the same but instead of using the horn I use a push button in center console. IMO the horn would be better. https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...light=step+PFC |
sk8 do you have the 6al-2 or the regular 6al and the seperate 2 step module? also are you running it only on the leadings? btw that write up is nice.
|
6al with 2 step module. Run just like the write up with button activating the step and the relay to shut off trailings. Consistent 60 footers!

I'm not to up on my rotory knowledge, but I assume we just have the Two coil packs. I have three on my VR4 so I use a DIS-6, and it has built in high and low soft touch rev limiter"twostep" and timing retard for NOS. it is also an ignition amplifier, and I will never see spark blow out. since the RX's only have two coil packs, you could use a DIS-4. the HKS twin Power DLI does the same thing, but is a fraction of the size of the MSD units.
|
You can't run a rotary on a single DIS-4.

Sounds like need to stay on the vr forums.. Just saying. |
