Running Ball Bearing

Hey guys,

Don't know much here, but I read somewhere that running a ball bearing single turbo was not optimal for a rotary motor. I also heard that in Japan most people don't run ball bearing turbos on rotaries. Now, since the GT series turbos are so popular in the states I'm guessing that it's probably fine, but I was just wondering if someone could explain why a ball bearing turbo would not be optimal. Just more for my edification. Thanks.

Victor

I'm just guessing, but it could be due to debris in the oil causing durability issues with the ball bearing setup. Rob at Pineapple recommended prefiltering the oil before it goes into the turbo. This is just a guess so don't qoute me on this.

It shouldn't matter wether it's piston or rotary though.

Ha! Yeah they looked a little worn so I'm getting new soles for you. ;) Gotta take care of my customers.

There is no such thing as a BB turbo, it is a myth created by Sean to get his customers to pay more for turbos:D

Curious about this issue myself, so I did a search and found this link. Google info suggests there is a good discussion here about this topic, but you gotta log in to get there.

I only charge extra for the golden BB's Carl, I'm not that evil.

One drawback to running ballbearing turbos on a rotary----when (not if, when) you blow, chances are good an apex seal piece will take out your turbine as it passes out the exhaust port. Rebuilds on bb turbos are freaking expensive.

I love the when ;) Even still I have replaced numerous wheels only not needing a CHRA replacement.
