Responsive setup opinion

Long story short, bought my car with a blown engine but it came with a rebuilt half-bridge shortblock. Now im in the process of putting everything back together and im looking for a suitable turbo. Im looking to build a very responsive setup, if possible trying to make full boost under 3500 rpm. My hp goal is anywhere between 350-400 whp with all supporting mods. I cannot seem to find any info in regards to building a super responsive setup with a half bridge. The turbos that caught my eye were the t04s and the GT35r. Are these turbos capable of those numbers, and when could i expect to see boost by? Any info is appreciated. Edit: engine is a 13b-REW

look for something bigger, the half bridge will help spool bigger turbos.
IMO TO4R of borgwarner S366 would be the starting point on a HBP

Precision 6262 or 6265 would be a good choice.

Boy did I see that coming!!! ;)

Hehe :D

I think the 62/62 would be a bit small on the turbine since it's a touch smaller than the 35R turbine. A 62/65 would be nice. I am just not a big fan of precision not offering divided housings. Which means your limited if you get their turbine wheels, unless you get sneaky and do some mixing and matching if you have the resources.

ScorpionT 03-28-09 01:24 PM

For a low boost setup the 6262 would work pretty decent, but yeah, the 6265 works better for more powerband. I know what you mean with no divided housings, but I have a custom setup I can do for the 6262, and maybe the 6265. Im putting one on an Evo pretty soon and we'll see how that goes.

I do the same I order almost anything that I get from precision without turbine housings then go from there on if I want it divided or not.

I usually order them as box units, but some cases I need custom setups. I found a setup that works good for a divided housing on the 6262. Shearer tried it and it worked for low end but was crap for higher end power.

Would i run into any problems running a t04s? Once again, not looking to make tons of power, just lookin for alot of response.

_Bahrx7_ 04-05-09 01:30 AM

Alright so i found a turbo for sale locally and was wondering about about how it will run on my 1/2 bridge. Its a garrett T04B, model # T04B90. Its compressor side is .60 and exhaust is a .96. Would I have any problem running this on my car?

fd_neal 04-05-09 11:28 AM

thats way too small, it will work, but there are way better turbos out there for a half bridge.

_Bahrx7_ 04-05-09 11:51 AM

yes i know its on the smaller side, but im not looking for a MAX hp setup. This is going to be a very responsive setup and i only want around 350 whp. Would this turbo work for that?

ProjectD 04-05-09 12:58 PM

A-specs 500r would probably work very well with your ports, i'm running a HBP with their 3574 on a .96 a/r and several people said it was way too small but like you, I'm not looking for peak power. And I have no doubt my setup is gonna meet my expectations when it's finally tuned. A t62-1 would probably work well for you also. Just something to consider. But I also think the to4b you mentioned will be to restrictive

_Bahrx7_ 04-05-09 07:57 PM

so your saying that i shouldnt run this turbo? any other input from anyone on this?

ProjectD 04-05-09 08:48 PM

correct, the turbo is too small.

classicauto 04-06-09 03:34 PM

A local is running T04-B here, .96 open valute turbine housing. Makes around 400whp at 20psi depending on where you dyno it

You'll likely want a larger turbine housing, but I wouldn't go so far as to say its absolutely too small. There's alot of other more responsive turbos though. Anything (T4!) GT35R with a divided housing and manifold will treat you well.

Is the local running the T04B on a half bridge, stock ports, or ?

How about the T04B with stock porting? I guess that's not too off topic...

_Bahrx7_ 04-06-09 04:58 PM

yes, i would also like to know. if i am able to run this turbo i will just because i can buy it from a friend rather than ordering it but i need to know soon.

fd_neal 04-06-09 11:16 PM

That would be a responsive turbo on stock ports, on a HBP youll spool very early and run out of steam early. Nothing wrong with early spool, except when the top end suffers on a ported motor.

classicauto 04-07-09 10:46 AM

He's just streetported. Its quite responsive, don't recall exact numbers but it was quite similar to my 3574 on a streetport.

arghx 04-07-09 11:30 AM

the T04B 60-1 you mentioned would indeed be responsive on a half bridge, and that's what this thread is about. I think you should go for it if it's a good deal. How much is he asking? If it's a real Garrett and it's like $300-$400 I would definitely go for it. .96 is not that small. it would probably be like running a .82 on a streetport. don't expect much power over 7000rpm though.

_Bahrx7_ 04-07-09 01:16 PM

its a true garrett, brand new and only $500. Should i do it? need to know ASAP.

I read it as being a 60trim not a 60-1. a little bit smaller than a 60-1 and a significant impact on output.

To the OP you keep asking if you should get it;
It will work
It will be far from ideal
Your top end will suffer
you will see boost early, but before the motor is in its powerband.
there are other turbos that will still be responsive without the drawbacks, its your call
