Resonated Midpipe??

Hey guys,

After reading many threads on single setups with exhausts noises being too loud, I have come to the conclusion to change my exhaust setup bc it is way too loud, and especially in Cali, this just dosen't fly. Currently running dp -> mp -> r-majic Ti, basically a complete straight through.

I am going to purchase a used blitz nur-spec catback, will have the WG plumbed, and run a resonated midpipe, hopefully this will significantly lower my db's. Only problem now is I don't want to waste more money getting a resonated midpipe from rx7store. I already have their midpipe and figure I could just buy a magnaflow muffler and have a shop weld it on to my existing MP, will this work?? Where can I get one for a good price and what size? Thanks for the help guys.

Did I ask a stupid question?? anyone?

GoodfellaFD3S 02-05-07 10:51 PM

I'm pretty sure this is the one you want, on center 3 inch inlet and outlet:

Found one for you, less than $90 shipped :)

I'm in the same situation. I've heard good things about both Magnaflow and the Borla XR-1. Has anyone had experience with the two? Which is deeper quiter sounding?
I also have the Blitz Nurspec catback.

GoodfellaFD3S 02-06-07 12:36 AM

Definitely go with the magnaflow, it's straight through.

I've held one of the XR-1's in my hand, and it has a U-shaped baffle that runs the length of the tube. That can't be good for flow.

GoRacer 02-06-07 01:12 AM

There's a different XR-1 which is the race version. Everyone on here gets the sportmsan. The race versin has three pipes with like a cone that split the air into them. It's alot more expensive.

The problem you may run into, which I allready had is the shape of the mid pipe or rather the bends. Mine is too far to the pasenger side to allow an oval shaped muffler to be welded in. I installed a metalit cat but that didn't do much for sound, although it cleaned up the smell. After that I installed a Moroso SS Spiral flow and that did help (maybe 10db) but allthough my ears don't (literaly) hurt anymore, it's still loud but not painfull. I was afraid I would be kicked off the track but 3 Hondas were way louder then me. The funny part is the sprial flow kinda makes it sound like a jet plane.

If you don't want a high flow metal cat and you want free flow then you could try welding in a DNA exhaust. If space is an issue, then try the collector version. I know my Spiral FLow has some restriction but I have no idea how much.

oh btw: The Blitz is obnoxious with a mid pipe. Keep the R-Magic for shure.

turBRO240 02-06-07 01:53 AM

i was thinking of the same thing... except running a DP - resonated MP - and a greddy SP2 or 3" cutsom magnaflow

what are you guys take on that... anyone run that setup before?

vkotis 02-06-07 09:35 AM

I have the same setup with the Blitz-NUR cat-back and Magnaflow resonated midpipe. Its pretty quiet at idle but it sounds great when you get on it:D I think its a good setup.

Roto7FD 02-06-07 10:42 AM

Thanks Goodfellas and everyone else who chimed in.

Hey GoRacer, I really do want to keep the Ti, but I don't know how much it will quiet down even if I did put another muffler on the midpipe.

GoRacer 02-06-07 05:37 PM

Well the Blitz is a higher pitch noise and obnoxious without a cat. If the R-Magic is an oval shpe then it should have more packing then the round Nurspec. You could try the Borla Race XR1 or a DNA muffler but if your mid pipe is towards the side instead of the center then you could consider a Magnaflow offset same end muffler. There is also a strait section on the cat back pipe that you could insert a bullet type muffler.

I have a borla XR1 (3.5") off of a 3.5" downpipe that does neck down to 3" at the flange to my Racing Beat dual tip exhaust. When my car is running again I can give feedback. I hope that is sometime VERY soon!

Roto7FD 02-06-07 05:58 PM

Midpipe I believe is in the center. In reference to the packing, there is none, haha it's as hollow as you can get on that R-Majic with just one slight bend. It's pretty much a canister like that of the apex gt exhaust. I heard the nur-spec with a rx7store resonated midpipe and I thought it sounded pretty throaty/beefy, although still noisy it was a kitten compared to the current setup I have. That flame shooting out the exhaust isn't really working out for me.

Update: Just notified by the shop where my car is currently being worked on right now that a guy with a FD is going LS7, he has a resonated MP, so my friend said i could have it. YES!!! I guess I'm going to try it out with the Ti and see how it sounds, worse comes to worse I'll just pick up the nur-spec and sell the Ti.

ROTORHP 02-06-07 06:46 PM

LS7?! wow... spending the quid. That engine is nice( even though it is a piston throwing thang) ;)

Roto7FD 02-06-07 06:52 PM

I know, I heard dude bought it brand new for $14k with titanium rods, etc. It sure does look bling bling.

LS7?...Nice!
If you do install the MP can you update this thread with the differences in exhaust note?
Thanks, D

I have one more question in regaurds to the midpipe.
After searching for many hours I've decided that I would like to go with a High Flow Cat to help with both noise and the "Gas Smell" especially. I'd be willing to sacrafice power on the street for this.
Instead of chopping up my straight thru midpipe I think I'd rather go with a complete midpipe with cat so I can have the option of swaping it out for track days. What do you guys think about the rx7store section?
http://www.rx7store.net/product_p/highflowfd3s.htm

Are there any other options out there for a good price?

Thanks for your help! Dan

That should work pretty well. If you've got the money and can stand to wait a little while, though the SMB Metallic Cats are supposed to be more effective than plain honeycomb-cats, and will flow even better.

It's about halfway down the page.

Just FYI, the high flow cat will most likely be louder than the Magnaflow resonated mp.

LionelRosef 02-08-07 02:36 PM

I was hoping you would stop by and see me today while you where in Manhattan. I need to get a good look at your tail pipe. Tell Ihor I miss his beefy mits on my engine.

But what about the smell? Will the Resonated MP help with that? I'm assuming it's a stright thru design for noise only. Tell me if I'm wrong though.
I've decided to go with this for now:

Here's a pic on Ebay, but I'll be purchasing this from Summit here in Reno.
(The Metallic Cat)

I will be cutting my MP afterall. (It's cheap anyways lol)

GoodfellaFD3S 02-08-07 05:03 PM

You assume correctly, it won't help a bit with the smell. But for some us, the smell is a kind of perfume :D

That's the one I have on the FC, it did wonders to the single 3 inch catback sound level! If I have to do it all over again, I would go with a magnaflow instead, less restriction(?), and waaaay cheaper!

YES sir!

I replace the borla MP with a magnaflow high flow cat for street use; DBs go way up, almost as high as when not running a MP at all.

That's the one I have, without the Borla MP (the cat replaces the borla MP); my single exhaust FC is LOUD X 2!

I agree. But in this case the perfume gets me high :aroused:
Plus, I have the challenge of getting a Smog certificate and need every bit of help I can get.
