Renesis Turbo Dyno.

Copied from the rx8club forum:

Here is the result:

366whp/265wtq

Here are the conditions for the run and below find the dyno graph:

- Completely out of the box Esmeril Racing Turbo kit with atmospheric dump.
- 13 psi.
- Esmeril Racing Ignition Upgrade Kit (stock coils fail at anything above 10psi....actually they even fail when stock :)).
- ABS/DSC fuse pulled (all other methods failed).
- Between 40-50% humidity and 80deg.
- 91 Octane pump fuel with no additives.

Some clarifications before questions arise:

The dyno we used (the newest/nearest one to our location) was nearly brand new, just installed a few weeks ago and the dyno cell/enclosure hasn’t been finished. No extractor was set up for the exhaust gases and the rear door was unopened due to the opening mechanism not being in place yet. All these variables caused the air inside the Dyno cell to be saturated with low oxygen air(it was a cave with the exhaust facing towards the inside wall) evident by the fact that on the street the car runs at 11.5AFR with this exact setup/map/etc. and when in the dyno it dropped to 10.0-10.2AFR across the board, further dropping to a super low 9.4AFR in the 5200rpm region which was a little detrimental to the tq/hp curve (it would have been at peak from this point on but it suffered a dip in this region). Should our dyno have been well ventilated and the humidity lower (it was storming outside) we expect more can be coaxed from the set-up as it sits.

This current number, however, is more than we anticipated on this A/R turbo housing (our original promise was of 340whp at 13psi and you can see that at 8000rpm the A/R starts limiting peak power a little bit). We feel very confident that with a fully operating dyno (with some kind of airflow going through it ) the results would be even more favorable.

I just though you guys would like to know where the renny stood at. I know everyone here isn't very impressed by high 300 numbers but for a renesis at 13psi with a bolt on kit and under such conditions, its a pretty big deal. Feel free to comment.

The turbo is a 60mm compressor with a P-trim wheel in the back with a .80ish housing and on the street it feels like a lot more than 366whp, specially on cool, dry nights. Will soon change to a 1.15 a/r and go again with better conditions, what should I expect?.

Thanks,

Chris

Awesome.

Not bad for an RX-8. Lets see how long it holds together :)

Awesome dude, when is the E85 tune ? :)

shush! That is a secret ;).

That will be once we upgrade the housing and do another run on pump. :)

Thanks for the pros,

Chris

We've actually ran this car with the kit for over 2 years. We just hadn't dyno'ed it successfully due to the TCS/DSC(which is still operational through the drive by wire throttle even with the standalone microtech LT10x/Int-X installed) not letting us dyno properly. We finally found a way to deactivate this system completely and this was the result.

I've actually found the apex seals in the 8 to be quite hard, its the 10:1 compression that causes breakage under detonation. If you get through tunning without detonation and keep the afr's around 11.5:1 and the timing at 8deg advance under 14psi or more after that its actually pretty foolproof, but you probably already new thats what it would take from previous rx-7 experience ;). We're happy!

Thanks for the comments,

Chris

The run was done with the same setup as the previous run but at 16psi.

This time the dyno was well vented and although the humidity was not ideal the numbers speak for themselves.

The car ran extremely rich above 7000 rpm with the AFR dipping into the 9's past 8000 rpm. We only did a few runs and didn't attempt to tune the rich area. Regardless, our goal was accomplished, we were happy and decided not to push it anymore at that time.

The dyno rpm pickup was having trouble in the high rpm range possibly due to the rich condition so we had to plot the run with MPH on the X axis. The run was done in 4th so rpm can be figured out if needed.

Torque peak was 304wtq.

Chris

Now I will finalize the E-85 system(this run was on gas) and change the rear turbo housing, possibly the entire turbo ;), and go again for more...Now that I did it on the renesis in stock form I might finalize some changes to an engine I've been working on and drop that in......not sure yet.
