Removing double throttle blades

Guys,

when you have removed the double throttle blades in the throttle body, do you also remove the double blades in the UIM as well?

The only plates you need are the throttle body plates. The other one is for the aws. I don't recall removing 2 sets of plates

That is my question. People are removing the double plates in the throttle body, but what about the vacuum operated double plats in the UIM?

If you remove the plates in the throttle body, you will be running wot all the time. You can remove ONLY the plates in the uim.

Word. Do NOT NOT NOT mess with the plates in the TB.

Removing the pair of plates in the upper portion of the UIM is a bit of a pain, the screws are mushroomed on the backside so they need to be drilled out. Then use an air saw or something similar to cut through the shaft and pull it out in pieces. Lastly, best thing is to have the open hole on the backside welded up as there really isn't enough surrounding material for a block off plate to seal adequately.

Thank you Goodfella.

I will work on the UIM today then drop off to have port matched with my excessive LIM.

Just an FYI... The FD has the No. 2 secondary throttle plates in the UIM, and the FC has the No. 2 secondary throttle plates in the throttlebody itself. The systems function in a similar way, but the FD system is computer controlled by a vacuum solenoid while the FC system is controlled mechanically through a coolant-temperature activated vacuum valve.

The whole point of the system is to prevent possible damage from abuse, drivers beating on the car before it's warmed up. So the main throttle butterflies are still opened by the throttle cable but this extra set is used during cold operation. Modern engines have electronic throttles so this type of system isn't necessary (and neither are a lot of other things like ISC valves).

So removed the double plates in the UIM. Easy i must say. Maybe because my car only has 25k on it.

So what can I weld up on this besides the double plate holes? Did anyone weld the holes in the center that held the shaft for the plates?

Any points you can give. What or were can I search on the forum for closing up the holes I will not need on the UIM?
