Red hot pipes
 

I recently bought a single tubo kit from a seller on ebay. Nothing fit right but luckily, I have access to a machine shop. I started it up tonite to check for oil leaks and such,and found that after about a 10 minute warm-up, the exhaust manifold from the block to the turbo is red hot. I mean when you idle up, its real red. Is this normal? If it is, should I wrap it with insulation, or what?

I am just posting what I have noticed on my setup. Never gets glowing hot on idle...Even when I am getting on it a little around town. Only time I ever see red hot is when I am boosting hard all the time for more than 10 min or so and then it's just the exhaust housing that's glowing red.

that's what you get from an ebay product. I've gave up on that so long ago. Just too many scammers.

I have several points... some of which echo previous posters...

1 - How thick is the material on the manifold?
2 - Is it a tubular style or a cast hunk-o-metal style?
3 - What A/R and turbine wheel are in your Ebay kit?
4 - What air/fuel ratio and timing are you running at idle?

Mine will glow sometimes faintly, but that's after I've fully warmed up the car and been f'ing around with it some. I think yours sounds a lot redder/hotter/whatever.

the only time ive ever seen a manifold glow at idle was when the motor was leaking water that was getting cooked in it.

Possible that your timing is to far retarded causing your egt to go through the roof. It shouldn't get that hot at idle or part throttle.

I wouldn't dare drive it like that!
