Received new Borgwarner turbo, novice questions
Hi guys,
I'm not an expert in turbos. I'd like to install it myself though, then I'll have it tuned. 1. This port has been manually tapped when I first received that turbo. On the new turbo, there seems to be some kind of threads in the blue circle. I'm not sure how to deal with it. 2. Is it me or the hole for the oil turbo feed is super small? 3. Am I supposed to drill 2 holes into that so I can plug in my feed line? 4. Can I rotate the turbine housing by removing these bolts? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1d9813edaa.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...fab35ef10f.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...96842ec412.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...31b49474db.jpg |

The part circled on the new one is a speed sensor mount, there should still be casting material in the bottom of the hole, don't drill it unless you are going to fit a speed sensor, the one below that with an inhex plug should be a compatible thread for a barb fitting. 2. Is it me or the hole for the oil turbo feed is super small? They are restricted, if it's about 1mm that's right, but it might be easier to have a new hose made as per the following point. 3. Am I supposed to drill 2 holes into that so I can plug in my feed line? Probably easier to get a new oil line made up. 4. Can I rotate the turbine housing by removing these bolts? *Compressor in picture be aware you can damage the compressor cover seal, probably best to take them right off and pull the front cover away from the seal before turning it. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...1d9813edaa.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...fab35ef10f.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...96842ec412.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...31b49474db.jpg |
Alright! Thank you. Questions 2, 3, 4 are now closed.
But I still do not understand the first question. How am I supposed to plug the hose that goes to the boost controller? The threads are very small on the new one and it seems to be going nowhere. |

It is just there in case owners want to run a turbo speed sensor, like this: https://www.full-race.com/store/borg-warner-efr/turbos-efr-series/borgwarner-efr-turbo-speed-sensor-kit-2/ If it hasn't been drilled through then you don't need to do anything. |

The port you circled in your first photo is not for a boost controller. From the factory that hole should NOT go all the way through. Are you saying that it was drilled through before you received it?

As a guess, I'd say that was boost pressure reference.
What kind of oil restrictor size do I need for the feed line? Turbo is Borgwarner SXE-362 76mm 0.91. |

Alright, thanks. May I ask an extra question?

Honestly I'm not sure. If you're feeling fancy you could put an oil pressure regulator in there, Turbosmart makes one that seems pretty nice. https://www.full-race.com/store/fitt...0-40psi-black/

Not a big fan of waiting another 3 weeks for such minor part...
It's absolutely more costly than just a restrictor though. |

Definitely! I didn't realize it had a long wait time. It *is* an easy way to ensure you get a constant/safe oil pressure though :)
It's absolutely more costly than just a restrictor though. Meanwhile I just removed the compressor cover to rotate the turbo and there is no seal? Is it normal? It was bought brand new... https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rx7...f747d91987.jpg |
