R85 Dynos - Has anyone finished and dynoed?

Please don't post the dyno chart from KGparts.com. I think we all have seen it. As impressive as it is, I'd like to see a dyno from an independent source.

Has anyone finished yet? I think MaxCooper is done with his car, but I haven't seen any results yet.

Please share! Inquiring minds want to know. :D

Dyno scheduled for Friday, April 29.

Nice. Anyone else?

I thought you were contemplating an LS1 swap?

I still am. It's not cheap, so I'm just weighing my options.

Poweraxel 04-26-05 06:39 PM

i think some guy named "damian" (spelling?) tuned his already??????? at least he posted that earlier in the month???

Carl Byck 04-27-05 02:54 AM

What sort of power are you looking for? I assume you want 500 on pump right? I ak, since you seem to already have everything but he tuning, the turbo, and h2o injection. Hopefully i'll be tuning Saturday, and post some respectable numbers on the pt67 .81 P trim

Carl,

I'd like to make around 450 rwhp @ 1 bar on pump gas with minimal lag.
I'd also like to be able to crank up the boost and make around 525 rwhp @ 20 psi (~15 hp/psi). I will be interested to see what your results are. Keep us posted and get us a dyno chart!

Alan

Sounds like Kabooski's numbers, we'll see if I can repeat his performance. My ports are pretty small according to Steve Kan, based on vacume.

What is you vac readings and timming at idle?

Carl Byck 04-29-05 01:54 AM

I'll post those sunday when the car is done(I hope)

I'm waiting on the edge of my seat! :bigthumb: Good luck!

408HP, 297TQ @ ~16 psi, SAE corrected (CF=1.03), measured on a Dynojet. That was on 91 octane pump gas with the little air filter, my custom FMIC, street port, an SR resonated midpipe, and the older RS*R Racing Beat cat back.

The torque curve is very flat (280+ TQ from 5500 to 7700), and the peak HP on the graph was at 7700 RPM. The graph only dips a little bit at the top end and stops before 7800RPM. Maybe it would go even higher if we revved further, but that seems unlikely with the stock manifolds (though my LIM is slightly ported). I was hoping to make a little more peak power, but I am pretty happy nonetheless. In particular, I was glad to see that it still makes power (and torque) at high RPM. I was guessing 420 @ 15psi, which I figured was the boost limit on pump gas. But it seems to be fine with a little more boost than that. I'll post the plot once I get it scanned, but I don't have a scanner, so it might be a few days.

I'm really impressed with Steve Kan's tuning service. I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I was figuring that we'd do several full boost runs and he'd get the mixture fixed up. But it is much more than that -- Steve takes the car and does both boost and part-throttle maps and generally gets the car running great while you just sit and relax. That is just what I needed today; thanks Steve. I'd also like to thank David and Roman for organizing the dyno tuning day.

cool at least there are some real numbers on what this turbo will actually do..

interesting....

J/k!!! i was very impressed too!! i got some good numbers and i have Max's dyno on video... its about 10 minutes long with just pulls made..... i dont know how to transfer it over to a mpeg or other format yet... once i figure it out, ill post it but if anyone knows, please chime in!!

Sweet! Thanks for the input, mine should be here any day now. :)

FD Rey 04-30-05 10:45 AM

Is it just me or do those torque numbers look awefully low, specially with a ported motor?

SPOautos 04-30-05 10:52 AM

Max, is that 16psi on the gauge or pfc?

FD Ray, yea I was thinking the same thing. Max how well does the boost climb? It sounds like your not hitting peak boost till high up in the rpm range or something. I dont think I've ever seen a 400+ hp dyno with that low of tq. Normally they are in the 330-350tq range with that kind of power.

Did you ever try pulling that little filter off for one run to see if it made a difference?

Anyway...contrats a car making 400rw on pump gas feels awesome doesnt it!!! You should be trapping in the mid 120's in the 1/4....pretty damn strong isnt it lol

Stephen

Nuvolari 04-30-05 11:01 AM

mid 12's with a 400 + FD, nah more like low 11's .

I said 'trapping mid 120's.....in other words he should be trapping around 123-125mph in the 1/4. That would be LOW 11's or maybe a high 10 on slicks.

Max,

Are you sure about the torque number. Check the bottom corner of the page, where it has your peak numbers.

Also, I have to say, I have never heard anything quite like an R85 turbo before. On deceleration, it literally sounds like a small jet plane landing. Unfrickenbelievable!!!! :D

i like the semi sound in 5th gear cruising on the highway under light accelleration :)

Howard Coleman 04-30-05 11:32 AM

congratulations Max, and also to Steve Kan.

looking at the HT300 comp map it looks like you got pretty close to all you could get at 1.1 bar 56 lbs/min divided by 10 times 144.71 divided by 1.92 derives 422 rwhp if everything was optimized.

i hope you get a chance to have some fun tracking your car.

just make sure your brakes are in good shape as you will need them:)

rotor_dee 04-30-05 03:27 PM

Good job Max. There is prob a little more left with your setup but definetly respectable with only 91 octane. We have seen as much 440rwhp on 93 octane at 15psi, prop had a little more timming then yours due to the fuel difference and and straight mid pipe with no resonator, and a much larger filter :) don't be afraid to stretch it out at high rpms it will keep pulling :) even with conservative ports would have been nice to measure back pressure on the turbo you would have been amazed. Thanks for hanging in there with us max!! The overnight shipping was on me for you beeing so patient. And also I would like you to test something for me when you get a chance give me a call.
