Pics of turbo I bought, I have questions.....

Well, recieved a turbo I purchased yesterday. Got it apart to clock the housings correctly, and I found this :

Also, the compressor wheel looks like it ought to have a nut securing it to the shaft. It doesn't spin independantly from the shaft, but how can you balance a shaft/wheel assembly, if you can't clock the wheel where you want it...

I'm no expert, but I'd say that had gotten the crap beat out of it once upon a time. Buy used? From here or ebay?

Turbo1 11-30-04 04:38 PM

bought used, from here. To be fair to the seller, I'm not sure he has seen the pics yet. It was rebuilt by Precision Turbo (according to the seller). I wonder if he's missing part of his motor, or PT didn't really "rebuild" it.

maxcooper 11-30-04 04:54 PM

That turbine is trashed. There should be a nut holding the compressor wheel on, but it looks like there might be one there and it just looks weird. It is hard to tell for sure from the pic.

the compressor wheel has a hex built into it, but there is no nut seperate from the wheel.

nyt 11-30-04 04:58 PM

I'll say straight up this turbo was from me. I sold it used to turbo1 and did not expect any problems like this. The wheel was visibly fine when I took it out of the car (had to remove the turbine housing to get it off the car so I saw it). I was actually replying to your email now but I'll just post in here since youre apparently paying close attention to it.

As for the compressor wheel, there's a nut on there clearly visible (see the hexagon?). If its part of the compressor wheel I guess that's just garretts new design but thats how the turbo has always been.

As for the motor, there clearly arent any parts missing since I dyno'd it right after i swapped turbos with a t-61 and made 422rwhp with the tires spinning on the dyno.

I have the motor out of the car now due to a bad coolant seal. I'll gladly take pictures of all my seals intact if you want (if I can ever get the front pulley bolt out).

This turbo was blown once and the turbine was completely destroyed (S4 motor popped). I sent it to precision for a rebuild (i still have the receipt somewhere) they charged me $300 for it and it came back with a nice new turbine.

I emptied out my exhaust manifold of all the pieces as well from the blown motor, and even made sure to clean the pieces out of the wastegate then before putting this turbo on. Again, when I took this out of my car the night I sent it to you, I saw nothing wrong with it.

I'm at a loss for where this damage came from. I honestly have no clue.

If it was like that when I sent it to you, and you havent put it on any car yet, It's been like that since I got it back from precision. I made 427rwhp with this turbo about a week before i sent it to you and i certainly didnt blow any motor parts through it in that time...

Either it was like that all along and the turbo ran fine and I missed seeing it, or something happenned after i sent it to you. All I can say is I dont remember seeing any damage like that when I pulled it off the car. I honestly didn't expect to get an email like that or see a post like this.

NYT, please let me be clear on something. I'm not here to trash talk, start shit, etc.. I seriously doubt that you knowingly sold it to me like this, else I wouldn't have brought it to a public place such as rx7forum.com.

I'd like to know what a new wheel might cost, as I'm not sure this will last very long (I'm assuming another $300). Then again, maybe it will? I do expect to upgrade turbos in the next year after I get the motor ported, but will it last that long? Is it worth anything now? Would precision do anything for it? Did they knowingly install that wheel in it?

And most importantly....What good is it to me now?

I see what you mean by the hex on the compressor housing. I thought that was used to hole the wheel while the nut was tightened on top of it.

Anyone else have pics of a GT40 that I could use for reference?

nyt 11-30-04 05:17 PM

that compressor is fine its been like that forever, the wheel isnt going anywhere thats just garrets design.

thats obviously not damage from getting smacked on anything as the damage is directional, something must have hit it while the turbine was spinning... it looks like you cleaned the wheel up, maybe there was carbon built up or something and i didnt see it?

If that damage wasnt caused by you id assume its been like that a while. i never had any problems with any motor while that turbo was on the car, and the turbo has run flawlessly. it doesnt look like any material was removed from the blades. I don't see any problem running the turbo like that (if no material is gone, it should still be balanced fine). I never had any problems while that was on my car ever since the precision rebuild and the s5 motor i put in (both went in at same time). I don't think there would be any problems running the turbo like that as long as that doesnt touch the turbine housing. was it just those 3 fins that got bent up or others as well?

Turbo1 11-30-04 05:19 PM

a few more are bent up, looks like something went through the turbine section. (those were the worst). Unless you removed the housing, you can't possibly see this damage. I agree with you about FOD.

No clean up by me, I just unscrewed the 4 bolts holding it on the center section, and took it out. I saw the damage, immediatly took pictures, then began to wonder what to do about it.

Isn't a new turbo like this ~$900 ?

Uhm, if thats no cleanup by you, something is amiss here. I don't feel comfortable discussing this any further on the forum.

and yes, I did take the turbine housing off as removing the rest of the turbo first, and turbine housing last, is the only way i could get the turbo out of my setup.

the reason i say something is amiss here, this is how the turbine looked when i sent it to you: (Very high resolution, large pic)
turbo in question is on the left.

Turbo1 11-30-04 06:31 PM

it was quite oilly when I recieved it, not rusty, etc.. I took it out of the bag, tried to figure where I was going to mount it, removed the housing, and whala, there it was.

nyt 11-30-04 07:06 PM

I'm sorry if I dont buy this story, but thats in totally different condition then when I sent it to you. I had the turbine housing off and would have clearly noticed something that bad. Please post more pictures of this, up close and not blurry.

Rx_treme 11-30-04 07:12 PM

I have a turbo thats basically identical to that. It seems to be a PT67 or there abouts. with a GTQ turbine wheel.

That little bit of roughness will not hurt performance.

I have seen much worse than that on a running car (mine) and it didnt make a bit of difference.
When looking at the turbo from the turbine outlet you cannot see that part without disassembling it.

nyt 11-30-04 07:16 PM

the problem here is I think turbo1 isnt being completely honest. Funny how my turbo goes from dry as a bone and completely white, to what looks like it was cleaned with some kind of solvent. There was nothing wrong with this turbo when i took it out of my car, I had to remove the center section from the turbine housing to get it out, and theres no way in hell it was like that. He says he didnt clean it, it didnt magically transform from white and sooty to perfectly clean. something is amiss and it feels like someone is trying to scam me

RETed 11-30-04 08:03 PM

WTF is going on?!?!?

nyt is a straight-up guy, and he makes enough money to not have to scam people.
This whole thing stinks from the start...

I don't understand why you are accusing me of something, when this is how I recieved the turbo. As I explained in the email I just wrote you, the turbo had a thin layer of oil on it and the housing, as well as the bag that it was sort of wrapped in. This is the same shine that is apparent in the photographs. More than likely, this was residual oil that was present in the center section, and leaked out during shipping. I will say that the shaft play both side to side and fore/aft is virtually nonexistant. As I emailed you, I do not have the car or turbo here with me tonight. A friend is allowing me to use the back bay of his shop to finish the fab work. I spent all day today fabbing up a manifold for this turbo, and the turbo is still there with the car. (I placed the turbo where I wanted it, bolted a flange to it, bolted a 1"x3" piece of steel to the flange, then tacked it on the frame of the car to hold it in place)

I will be there in the AM, and can take any angle of picture that you would like me to take. I have an older digital camera (2.5megapixel), but it will take TIFF files, which are ~8mb each, so hopefully any detail you might need will be there. I'll make sure to hit the macro mode so it will focus up close as well.

Please remember I have not accused you of ANYTHING, I just want to sort this out. I recieved this turbo as pictured. I have 121 positive ebay feedbacks, and over 150+ paypal transactions, without a single dispute. The last thing I'm going to do is lie to someone about a $500 turbo that I was sold.

This is how the turbo was recieved.

Turbo1 11-30-04 08:23 PM

Ahh yea, one more thing. I'm most concerned with the performance aspect of things. If this turbo will work fine, even if it's at 98% instead of 100%, thats OK with me. I just wish this situation was a little more clear. I realize I'm a newbie, and NYT isn't, but honestly people, those pics are what I saw, the moment I opened it up, right out of the box/bag.
This sucks

Marcel Burkett 11-30-04 08:52 PM

Damage like that is caused by excessively high exhaust temperatures.

nyt 11-30-04 09:29 PM

damage like that is caused from debris hitting the blades.

nyt 11-30-04 09:34 PM

if this turbo was in the car like that which i highly doubt (did precision send it back to me like this??) it made stupid power like that... but i dont think it was like that...

i dont recall seeing that on the turbine when i sent it, i had it apart and even took it inside, and reassembled it in my living room on the floor where the pic i posted was taken. i didnt see any damage like that.

as for debrit going through the turbo, i just disassembled my motor. pics coming up in a second.

Well i can vouch for Turbo1 that he never installed the turbo on a running motor. His car is in pieces right now.

nyt 11-30-04 10:52 PM

im wondering if maybe his friend did since its been at his friends place or something. *Shrug* thats the only motor that turbo has been on, not a single piece is unaccounted for, pic is right there =[

fastrotaries 11-30-04 11:07 PM

Is there a way that maybe you didn't notice this when you removed it? Strager things have happened. His friend is more concernced with his ZO6 than anything else.
