PICS: Is this rebuildable? Questions?

I bought this for $375. What do you think?

Its an XS T04S. There is about 1/8" shaft play and the compressor wheel rubbed the housing a little. It smokes a little, but still boosts o.k.

My questions are:
A. Do you think that the compressor wheel will need to be replaced?

B. In general what will it cost to rebuild it?

C. After researching a little I have seen that most people are making right around 400rwhp at 14-15 psi on pump gas. But the effiecency of this turbo is around 17-22 psi or so. I'm guessing that with a healthy port job and about 22psi(with mods to support) you would see around 480-500 rwhp on the dyno? Is this correct or am I way off?

D. Lastly do you guys think that I should buy the rest of the kit (manifold, WG, Downpipe) from XS or should I piece it together from different vendors? Which would be more cost effective?

Everyones help is really appreciated. I searched around and did a good bit of research before asking these questions but I didn't really find answers. Again, Thanks

What'd you do, steal it from him? That's a good deal....depending on what you have to rebuild.

...compressor wheel rubbing the housing...maybe not so good.

I would. Problem with that is the turbine's an HKS turbine, not a Turbonetics turbine. If you want to replace the compressor wheel, you'll need to get a 60-1 wheel from HKS since the HKS 60-1 and the turbonetics 60-1 are NOT interchangeable(because of the bottom of the HKS compressor wheel)

T4 Maintenance kit, dynamic seal Part# 10633 from turbonetics costs $80.67 List price/dealer $64.15. This is per the 2000 turbonetics catalog. The price should be comparitable. It'll come with Front/Rear oil seal, 2 bearings, thrust collar and thrust bearing. If you want to replace the HKS 60-1 with the turbonetics 60-1, you'll also need the back plate. 60-1 Wheel is part # 20177 and list price is $131.93/dealer is $105.55. 60-1 dynamic backplate assembly is part# 20381 and list price is $139.98/dealer is $111.98

I think you're way off. 400 rwhp on a T-04S can probably be reached with 16+ PSI. I have yet to see a dyno with a T-04S at 14 PSI make 400rwhp...most are around 380rwhp.

This is a matter of Opinion. I built my entire turbine kit(turbine/wastegate/manifold/front pipe/flanges/oil lines/block off plates/injectors/fuel rail/fittings/fuel pump/ECU) for less than $3000. But I also pieced it together over an entire YEAR. If I include an engine rebuild with 2 piece apex seals and HUGE street port/exhaust port, and IF I buy new housings, then the cost will go up to $4000. HOWEVER, you're not good with fabrication, or don't have friends who are good with fabrication, then you might want to just buy the kit.

J,

Thanks alot man. I appreciate you sharing the knowledge.

As far as 400whp at 14-15 psi Wargasm just did it. He put down 396whp at 14.5 psi in 105' room at KDR. His ratios were right around 11-11.5. Very safe streetable tuning. He didn't even mess with the timing. He could probably pull another 15-20 whp if he changed the timing around a little...correct?

Best part is Wargasm only lives about 1/2 hr away from me.

As far as switching from a HKS to a Turbonetics compressor wheel...What would you do? Is there an advantage?

I'm actually pretty mechanically inclined. I work for Mercedes and turn wrenches all day. I'll probably end up piecing the kit together like you did. If you see any sweet deals on things I'll be able to use let me know.

Thanks alot J.

Justin

SWEET!!! What's Wargasm using for EMS?

Either way, COST is probably going to be the deciding factor between the HKS 60-1 and the turbonetics 60-1(since if you switch to the turbonetics, you'll have to buy the backplate also:( )

Actually Wargasm is running a PFC...Not bad HUH?

Who would you reccomend for a good rebuild?

Since it's an HKS turbine, and HKS in infamous for telling people to take it to an authorized dealer(or is that Greddy...hmmm)

I appreciate it J.

All these people that know so much but no help from them.

Thanks
