OS Giken Clutch

Tried this in the 3rd gen forum and got a bunch of views and no comments so I figured Id try it here.

My clutch has been really pissing me off lately. Pretty much it feels like an on/off switch. Getting tired of not lining it up just right and stalling out, looking like a jackass that cant drive stick. So I was doing some research and it seems the OS Giken twin clutch can hold a lot of power but still is really smooth and is pretty close to the stock feel.

Wanted to see how many people here have experience with this clutch and if you feel the same about it.

Also going to the website I imagine that the talk I have seen about this clutch is refering to the STR twin plate clutch not the racing multi-plate. Please correct me if Im wrong.

i've had two twin plates in my 2nd gen and i absolutely love them. they are very harsh for daily driving though, but you get used to it. you can feather them a lil bit but its not like feather a normal clutch but more rather you are jumping a lil bit at a time.

i ordered an os giken str2c for my fd...HOPEFULLY it will come in by this week...ive been waiting for almost 3 months for it btw...i wil give a detailed write up when it is installed...

MakoRacing 08-23-10 07:26 PM

I dont have any personal experience with it, but Ive heard its a good piece...however I know a lot of people with Exedy twin plates, and have never heard a negative comment about them...theres actually one for sale(brand new, carbon? Too lazy to look lol) in the 3rd gen f/s section if you didnt see it.

fourkruzn 08-23-10 09:03 PM

i have driven four different os twins and they were all quite different. there was one that felt reasonably "stock" ish... one that was brutal on/off and two that were just regular on off like one would expect. for me i wouldnt want a os if your looking for smooth engagement.

ErnieT 08-24-10 08:51 PM

I've had the Exedy twin and triple disc as well as the ACT 6puck. Any multi disc setup will engage smother and lighter, but will not slip at all. The ACT will have a much heavier pedal feel, but will slip.

I had an OS twin but replaced it with a Mazdaspeed twin. The OS had unsprung clutch disks, while the Mazdaspeed disks were sprung. The OS had the off and on feel, the Mazdaspeed felt like a stock clutch. For driving on the street get a system with sprung clutch disks.

OS definitely has the on/off feel. I got used to mine, but not the best for daily driving. It also uses the pull/push converter which isn't the greatest designed piece..

armytim2002 08-25-10 03:05 PM

Thanks everyone for your advice and info. Is the Exedy twin sprung? Im open to suggestions. So far seems like Exedy is the pick of the forum other than ACT and a bunch of people who hate Spec lol.

catch-22 08-25-10 06:20 PM

Well ive used spec in the past and they can seriously suck it. Unless they have seriously improved their product I will never buy from them again.

armytim2002 08-26-10 10:55 AM

That seems to be the reaction I get with spec lol. Ive used ACT in other cars but Im not sure thats the route I want to take in this car.

ImamurA 09-13-10 04:00 PM

i finally got the os giken str2c clutch installed and driven it around the past few days...moving from the ACT organic disc to the twin i must say that it wasnt as smooth in engagement but the twin is smoother than the 6 pad clutch in my brothers 1st gen...the pedal is very light i think even lighter than the stock clutch...after driving the organic disc for about 4 years i must say that i am still getting used to the str2c...i dont stall the car or anything but sometimes when i pull off from stop the car will judder when easing off the clutch...but i think i am getting the hang of it...i will keep you updated as the clutch gets more mileage...

also if you do a search on youtube for "twin disc clutch noise" you will find some videos with an nsx, a wrx and an mr2 and you will hear the sound the clutch makes when depressed...when i received my car i must say that the clutch wasnt nearly as noisy as i thought it would have been...it does make a kind of whine when driving and decelerating but i am not bothered by it..

Molotovman 09-13-10 05:58 PM

I'm with T2 Vert. If you don't want the on/off feel, definately get a sprung clutch.
I recently installed a Tilton Twin Disc w/ a lightweight flywheel in my FC. It's unsprung, and the feeling is similar to stock, but you can't slip it. You're either spinning tire and going, bucking and going slow, or stalling.
The thing makes a hell of a whistling noise when you're accelerating too, But I think thats the holes in the flywheel.

armytim2002 09-14-10 02:41 PM

Thanks for the updates Imamura! Yeah Im deffinetly going with sprung but need to just do some more research and hunting. Thanks for the info everyone.

Was ready to buy though but my wife is "being let go" due to "contractual obligations". AKA some jerk on the east coast that knows nothing about what we do over here decided my wife doesnt do enough for the company. When in fact she is the workhorse of the company and every one is pissed at said individual now. So now is the time of saving and no fun :(

ImamurA 09-14-10 10:25 PM

im sorry to hear about that...i hope everything will be ok...:icon_tup::)

armytim2002 09-15-10 02:05 PM

Thanks. Hopefully shell get her job back because there are a lot of people telling this guy he messed up. Than Ill be back on track to buying everything I want... well not everything... Megan Fox probably comes with a high price tag...

classicauto 09-20-10 01:38 PM

FWIW, you can order the exedy twin's with sprung or solid friction plates. Sprung would give a little more cushion to engagment then solid plate setups such as ogura, OS etc.

armytim2002 09-21-10 11:27 AM

Cool. Thanks classicauto.

I was emailing A-Spec and they seems to swear by Spec clutches and say that OS are really expensive (which I can see that) and that Exedy clutches are ok but are really noisy and rattle a lot. Cant verify this with out one so does anyone agree with this and have personal experience with this?

armytim2002 09-29-10 10:34 AM

Ok I got some feedback on the OS Giken clutch and the Exedy Twin disk. Leaning more torwards the Exedy just because of the price but still thinking. I know a guy that I buy my parts from at wholesale and he was talking about the HKS Light Action single. Mainly because he can get it for pretty cheap and hes a big fan of HKS products. Does anyone use or know someone that uses this clutch?

kenn_chan 09-30-10 11:52 PM

I have both the OS giken sprung and un sprung. Unsprung unit is in the FB and is very harsh and unforgiving when compared to the sprung unit that is in my FD.

But there is a serious difference between them, the unsprung model is in my FB with a TII tranny & 13BT that sits just shy of 450 PS and it never slips, and has lasted for 4 years of DD with a 8 hour track session 3X per year 15 minutes on, 30 off each time for a total of 24 hours a tthe track each year. The sprung version is in the FD which dynoed at 420 PS and I have had to rebuild it twice. I think that the sprung center encourages you to slip it more making it where out faster.

FWIW everybody wants the OS even though it costs more. the HKS, and Greddy clutchs do not last as long, nor hold as much torque, regardless of the marketing they put out.

cheers

Trout2 10-01-10 01:19 AM

As far as I know, the HKS twin plate is solid disk, no sprung hub.

Like classicatuo said Exedy offers sprung and unsprung disks.

Any multi-disk clutch will rattle when not engaged.
