Oil pressure turbski regulator
 

Hey guys I have a half bridge with a s366, premixing, I was curious do you guys run an oil pressure regulator on your turbo inlet? I get puffs of smoke after a pull and oil, fresh rebuild maybe 2-3k in it, MAYBE, has always done it, I’m assuming the 110psi oil pressure it makes up top is leaking in the turbo on pulls what do you guys think, I found a nifty oil pressure reg with a little gauge on it on the forum a while back now I can’t find it to save my life but I want everyone’s opinion if anyone has input thanks in advance!

Usually when people are having problems with oil getting past the turbo seals because of too much pressure. a restrictor/orifice is used. There a few people on this board that run those turbos and will likely chime in on what they have done.

However, it's seems there are more people that have similar issues and it turns out to be some other cause. Insufficient turbo drain hose size or routing, or excessive crankcase pressure are common culprits.

You said this is a fresh rebuild, were you running this turbo before? Did it smoke before the rebuild?

Oil feed on those turbos do good -4 or -3 with no restrictor. The drain is where you have to pay more attention to, since requires at least -10. I ran -3 as oil feed no restrictor and 5/8 for oil drain with no sharp bends and short line to the block. Presure has little to do in reality, its about the ability to drain the oil as fast as possible. My oil pressure is about 130 psi on hard pulls. Some users had smoke after hard pull with -4 oil feed line some others do not. Some minor smoke is acceptable after hard pull imo.

I always had problems with smoking with a 4 AN feed line and no restrictor.

I went with the Freelance regulator. I have it set to give me exactly half the pressure of the motor, I get 120 psi on startup and only see 60 psi at the turbo. Hasn't smoked since.

It has worked as advertised, no guess work as with a restrictor.

Only problem is the plastic gauge doesn't do well mounted directly above a turbo that is a few hundred degrees. At least I can still read it. You should try to extend the gauge as far away from the turbo as possible to stop this from happening. Too late for me.

I use the turbo smart regulator. The turbo never sees more than 40psi. I use it because I still have the 35r on my car. When I throw my 8474 on I'll take it off because they're internally regulated. If the SXE needs a restrictor, the regulator is the way to go. The first thing you should do is make sure your drain doesn't have any links and is at least 10an.

That’s all I was looking for, angel Motorsports build the engine before I bought the car I’d hope they knew what size lines for the drain and feed I am very new with AN sizing so I’m not good enough to eye ball sizes for AN but I will do my best to verify them! Thanks you guys for all the input!
