No Space for my Holset H1E?! FD3
 

I have a UK FD3 and am doing a single turbo conversion with the intention of fitting a Holset H1E turbo. I actually have the wastegated version but I have disabled the wastegate.
I have a trust manifold to attach it to. I went to drop it in the hole last night and it won't fit! The lump of casting where the wastegate actuator used to fit fouls on the chassis rail. I think I might be able to grind enough off to get it to go in but it will be tight.. I am then not sure if it will clear the steering column?! Again it will be very close if it does!

Next problem is it looks like the water pipe that goes to the heater matrix, I think, is going to foul the compressor housing? (The metal pipe that is bolted to the chassis rail and runs around the back of the engine)
Are all these problems normal or should I be using a different manifold? do I require to re-route the water pipe? Steering coloumn wise I figure I might not get any help as I gather most of you guys are running LHD?

Is it just not possible to fit a WH1E unit and I need to get hold of a none wastegatd housing? Hopefully that is ont the answer!

i fitted a Holset HX55 in a FC with a cheapo ebay mani....bolted right in....the turbo was bigger than the front of the engine..lol
maybe your mani is too low or too short....if you dont want to buy another mani you could always make a long neck adapter to take your turbo up or out as needed.....maybe some pics will help us determine that.....good luck

The one time I avoid a cheapo ebay bargain and look what happens!! Although I did pick up the trust one pretty cheap! I will have a look at it over the weekend and maybe try and post some pics.. I can possibly bolt it all on my spare motor to show where it sits. I would say it does sit pretty low but then if it sat higher the LIM starts to stick out more and it may get in the way.. I will have a play and try and see where it looks like it might fit after I have ground some lumps off the housing that are no longer needed and just taking up room!
Did you need to weld a bigger wastegate pipe onto the ebay one? I figure they are pretty small?? What size gate are you running? I have a 45mm whih I hope will do the job?!

i ran into the same problem with my WH1E. i actually ground part of the turbine housing off the make it fit. i literally have millimeters between the housing and the frame. this is with a ebay mani. i will be building my own here very soon to cure this problem.

You can always pick up the non-wastegated hot sides...they are pretty cheap...and much more slim.

So it is a problem when fititng a WH1E then! Hopefully my manifold will do the job if I grind a lump off the housing.. Can you give me some idea of how much to take off?? Maybe post a pic if you have one? I might try and find a non-wastegated housing in due course, but hopefully I can get it fitted for now..
So there was no issue with the water pipe getting in the way or the compressor housing fouling anywhere?

my turbo mani was OBX i think...back then i ran a tiny 38 mm waste gate
this time with my miata rotary I am running a 44 mm and I made my own mani with schedule 40 elbows...my welding sucks but boy this mani is strong!!!

Okay guy's this is where I am..
I ground a lump of the WH1E today where the wastegate arm would normally bolt to and it fits in width way's, just about! But it sits on the steering column before it meets completely flush with the manifold flange. see pic

I disconnected the column and it sits down fine but very close to the chassis rail. I also think the compressor housing will foul on the water pipe going along the chassis rail.

If any one has any bright ideas or pics of there install please let me kow.. I think my turbo looks pretty low down.. But I am not sure raising it will help!? It's on a Trust or HKS manifold currently.

hmmm moving your water piping will be no worries really.get that out of your way first.........
then maybe if you have to you can make a 2 inch adapter to raise your turbo a bit, so you can clear the steering shaft........all you need are 2 flanges and a piece of tube..and voila your good......
you defi have space above to play with....

your turbo is defiantly not too big. your manifold is way too low in your engine bay, and causing all these problems. I would go with what ziig said, or buy a new manifold. whichever one is cheaper.

I will play with positioning the turbo and see where it looks like it might sit and clear! Do the ebay ones sit a lot higher?
Regarding the water pipe I 'll re-route that somehow!

Thanks for the help guys' I might look for some flanges in the meantime. I got a load of stainless arrive today for my downpipe and other bits so I should have some spare tubing hopefully the right size!

i put an extra t4 flange to raise mine up so it would hit my shock tower, but mine isnt rhd though. looks like your gonna need a new manifold that will put the turbo farther up and forward.

if you find some one with a cnc plasma cutter they can easily cut you two t4 flanges....one bolts to mani...then extend using tubing....the other end welds to t4 flange number two...you can move it up and forward or what ever you need by doing this and it may only cost you a few pounds.......
it will be way cheaper than a mani i think

Thanks man, I know a good machine shop that I can get stuff done cheap. Besides that I saw some flanges available on ebay that were not too much.. I have also been offered a different manifold for £40 which is real cheap.. possibly worth a go and then I can see which one will mod easier if niether fit nd sell the spare on.
