New Setup. opinions, and help..

ok so i have a 87 TII. stock engine just blew and cracked rear and mid iron. Ive been studing and working on my Fc for a while now, but dont consider myself an expert. Im doing the rebuild myself as i have a good back ground with piston engines.
my plans are hopefully close to 500hp on pump gas around town!
what im buying,
-pineapple full bridgeport
-ep3a exhaust port
-my current corksport 3" exhaust all the way back, no cat or emissions
-debating on hx52 or s472 turbo stock mani until i finish up the custom. if turbo will fit
-water/meth later in build
-haltech e6k
fuel inj, pumps, other supporting mods.
debating on wether to custom make a v mount , arc top mount, or basic fmic. what do you guys think. 500 hp on pump?

Change to S5 irons and then you won't have the cracking issue. Bigger ports as well.

IMO, shoot for 500 engine horsepower. This will allow you to choose a smaller turbo that will spool better and the car will be much more fun on the street. 500 rwhp is approaching 600 at the engine, and for a 1.3L engine you have to make some compromises.....

Mitchocalypse 01-28-13 09:53 PM

don't bridgeport it. large streetport.
having been in a car powered by a single holset turbo, i assure you that they take much MUCH longer to spool than a bb turbo. Theres a reason they go in diesels.. Maybe look into a used bb turbo, a gt35r seems like it would be up your alley.

If you're planning on using water injection, why wait until later in the build?

gjacks1857 01-28-13 10:44 PM

Im sorta on a budget. as far as water/ meth. imma start out low boost and work up to some good numbers once i have all my parts ..

would a s366 handle 500-600 on a bridgeport

bmwrx7man 01-28-13 10:52 PM

a s366 is wat ima go with later for 480-500whp pump gas i have a 87 t2 too . going for same goals . go with vmount cause the front mount on our cars block all the air going into radiator . get a s5 rear plate . i got a full s4 motor but i plan on getting a s5 rear plate and turblown stud kit . hopefully ill be fine

Holset HX52 can be had for $600 new and has a billet wheel. Might take a tad longer to spool than a BB but for the price they are great snails

not all s5 rear plates are thick, regardless of which plate you get if the engine is not tuned properly you will crack a plate. what were you doing to crack the center plate? s366 will make the 500hp but if you're on a budget, how are you going to afford a s366 when a hx52/55 is cheaper and you will not make 500 on pump with the hx52. just my 2 cents

Cosmo_TT 01-29-13 12:18 AM

And you will need a manifold and wastegate too, cause just this turbo mounted on the stock manifold will have no way of controlling boost, and no matter what irons you put on it, KABOOM!!!

jaggermouth 01-29-13 12:30 AM

I think the hx52 will make 500hp but your choice lol

Gt 35r great turbo spools fast and makes good power. On a turbo car Bridgeport is not necessary Streetport is the way to go. But if you must semi p-port could be an option vs bridge. On intercoolers I would pick v mount over front mount, because its less fabrication and quicker spool. With similar setups I've made 17lbs on a free rev. S5 block streetported with a gt35r 80a/r on hotside.....goodluck

gjacks1857 01-29-13 06:56 AM

I found

I fond rear and mid s4 irons for cheap.. i cant find any s5 plates.. would i be ok with safe tuning on s4 plates.. engine isnt studded or dowelled. dont think ill be able to afford that right now.. and i have found s366 for like 600 .. i could do that is they would be good for me..

thewird 01-29-13 07:04 AM

s4 plates are cheap because nobody wants them. Spend the extra time and find s5 plates. Irons are cheap, don't use money as an excuse lol. Make sure the dowel area sticks out above the rotor housing, that is how you tell. Even with good tuning, if 500-600 is your goal, the plates are going to crack. It will just be a ticking time bomb.

Look at the difference in size...

Usually making big power and being on a tight budget don't mix well......

Having said that, I believe I may have a set of S5 plates at the shop, next time I'm there I'll take a look at them :)

Mitchocalypse 01-29-13 09:01 AM

^^
Agreed with goodfella.

By the sound of it, 600hp is way over the scope of your budget

bmwrx7man 01-29-13 11:11 AM

i wonder if he knows 600hp is a low 10 sec car . dont think any 1 needs more than 500whp for a street car . and get a s5 plate . and the turbown stud kit its only $400

drftinmx6 01-29-13 11:25 AM

yeah dude, if you plan on making that kind of power be prepared to spend some serious cash, trying to build on a budget is going to cause you to blow your engine, so do it right, and do it once. either get s5 plates or end up with a blown motor with the kind of power you are shooting for, it's that simple. also if you want over 500whp on pump gas you need to be looking at getting a GT42, or borg warner s372 sized turbo, any turbo smaller than those you're probably going to need water/meth injection or switch over to e85. and like alot of these people said, 500whp on a street rx7 is crazy to drive on the street. so dont worry about shooting for 600whp right now, you dont even know what it's like to drive a 450whp rx7 on the street.

gjacks1857 01-29-13 07:45 PM

thanks

Im not on a super tight budget, but with in means.. I dont mind spending 6 or 700 on a good turbo. but 1000 is outta my range right now.. I already have close to 2000 saved up just for this build. and my engine was running when i disassemlbed it. ran lean and cracked rear iron (s4) so im build it back with more power.. not a dd but will see car meets. I just want the sound and nice power with out having to worry of overheating and racing fuel all the time.. but what do you guys think of the s475 turbo.. found one really cheap. if i ran 1600cc sec, and 850 primary on 1 bar.

s475 is a great turbo, but will need modification to fit, you will probably need a new manifold and you got to move the thermostat housing. you'd make around 450whp on 1 bar of boost, your best bet is to go with an s366 or s372 honestly, you will make great power with those two turbos.

S366 is plenty for your 500hp goal.

if you can make 600hp with $2000 then I must be doing something seriously wrong. We should be asking YOU questions.

Cosmo_TT 01-30-13 12:04 AM

And if you will spend 700 but not 1000 then that's a super tight budget, cause if I am building a car, which I am, and 300 more dollars got me something that is needed or is better or just a better option/choice, then I am spending the 300 more, and if you want 600hp then you are gonna be upset when you see how much it costs to do it properly or have it stay running without popping it at every tune session. It's gonna cost at least twice what you have, unless you can do the work yourself or buy used parts

drftinmx6 01-30-13 10:51 AM

building on a budget is going to cost you in the end, no matter which way you look at it, so if anything take your time and build it and buy the right parts, do it right, do it once. if you bought an rx7 with intentions as a DD then you bought the wrong car.
