Need Help With Single Turbo swap, tuning ext.

Recently I went Single turbo garret gt35r with my rx7 fd3s I went with a HKS cast manifold 10psi wastegate , running stock fuel , new fuel pump, running a power fc, I wanted to keep the car close to stock without running twins anymore my twins blew up at comp. I started having issues once I installed the gt35r trying to run near stock boost , car starts and runs idles fine can rev the car too 7k -8k in neutral no problem. But once I have the car in gear and start to build boost past 4-5lbs the car starts misfiring backfiring like crazy until I let off throttle . I'm not sure what this could be, I can hear a tick or click sounds like an exhaust leak near the exhaust manifold could my car misfire from the manifold to engine leak or turbo to manifold leak? I'm stumped on this I'm not even hitting close to stock psi, I had rebuilt the engine maybe 5000 miles ago. Engine runs fine just when I go into boost it misfires like crazy. Could it be my map sensor or my tps doing this? Spark plugs? I replaced ignition wires to 10m when installing the turbo, any suggestions on what to do to help the misfiring would be much appreciated. I' did the install myself and followed this guide on the install: http://www.negative-camber.org/crispyrx7/gt35rpage3.htm

Dude STOP! You are most likely leaning out and detonating. 10 pounds of air from you new turbo is most likely more dense than ten pounds from your twins.

does it drive and cruise fine? just acts up under boost?

if so, take it to a tuner before you are rebuilding the motor again.

I don't think I'm leaning out it's idleing at 11s-12s on my wide band , when I'm crusing without trying to boost the car drives fine but if I go into boost at 3-4-5psi the car starts to misfire or back fire like crazy

I don't think I have a tuner in my area that can tune a rotary. so I'm kinda stuck , sounds like a major exhaust leak on exhaust manifold side, like a tick maybe I can post a video

Now that I think of it, when I balp the throttle at idle it will happen aswell. If i hit the gas a few times it starts to misfire or back fire like its detonating. If I try to go into boost at all this happens. Could a major boost , exhaust manifold to turbo leak cause this? I can't figure it out for the life of me. I kinda want to take apart the exhaust manifold and turbo again just to make sure. There's a tick sound coming from the manifold maybe the wastegate. I'm pretty sure it's all right and tight down there. That's why I can here for advise or maybe if someone else has had this issue. If my motor blows I might just be done with rotarys take my 35r and put it on a ls engine. I know I'll get some hate from saying that but this is the 3rd engine I've gone through.

If anyone has done a gt35r swap running stock fuel no ports basically a single turbo swap and power fc, feel free to chime in now.

GT35R, stock fuel obvious engine commotion. You need new fueling and tuning to keep up with turbo.

Remove foot from gas pedal, turn engine off, place keys on dashboard and step away from the car.

I've read that a gt35r can be run on stock fuel. I should still be able to have boost. 10-12 psi is enough for me.

So what bigger secondary's or duel fuel pumps? I don't want a 500hp rx7 that's too much I just wanted to keep it close to stock while having a single

Mate, stop boosting it until you have tuned it. You cant do a turbo swap without a tune. Your new turbo is providing more air-mass per psi than your old turbo. Most likely you will need more injector too. Lean out -> detonation -> engine go bye-bye.

Single turbo

Um.. so guys . Apparently you can run a gt35r stock fuel. I just tore the uim apart. Found a massive boost leak for ***** and giggles I hooked up the turbo control and bam no more misfire I just hit 8psi no break up and it still wanted to pull . Idk what the hell anymore. I know I need a tune now and will look for a good tuner to help me.

Also my boost controller was set too high I was thinking maybe that was causing the misfire aswell. All In all I'm pretty happy that the rx7 isn't misfiring now. I don't know what the hell I was thinking earlier about a ls swap. Rotarys just sound too good. Thanks for all the input it really helped a bit.

Its risky. The stock injectors can only inject so much fuel. The gt35 can move more air than you can provide appropriate fuel for. Just because it works under some co ditions, does not mean it will be fine under all conditions.

There are multiple factors to look at with flow. It is much more than just pressure (psi). Fuel ratios are based on the number molecules. The higher the temperature, the less molecules at the same pressure. The lower the temperature, the more molecules at the same pressure.

But good luck.

Now, let's watch him blow up his car again and sell it for $5k to someone who will just put an LS in it...

You can run on stock fuel up with 35r to certain point, but get it tune. I am guilty of it, but mine need it to replace the coils that went bad. It was doing what you are describing. Do yourself a favor and get it tune, you will be happy then.
