My high comp build..

I'm just starting my new build, its going to be either 9.7:1 or 9.4:1(i haven't yet made up my mind on what rotors i'm going to use), inside a 13b-re block. As far as porting goes that were my questions come from. rather than by a template i've decided to make my own and was wondering what you guys think of this exhaust port so far. this is just a rough cut on and old housing to get a decent port on so that i can make my own template.

the rest of the setup is 13b-re irons(which are also going to be a big street port), a t4 p-trim t67 with a e-cover rather than a s-cover on the comp side, 1000cc injectors, full -6 fuel lines, bosch ext pump and surge tank setup, hks log manifold, hks 44mm wg, hks gd pro twin plate, 3" dp and apexi gt spec exhaust, and it has a microtech lt10s.

the car is mostly going to be used for auto-x and spirited driving, so as far as power levels go, its not a real big thing. it made 350whp with a stock re motor, so it should be intersting to see what it makes now at 14psi.

so here's the first attempt at the exh ports.

heres some pics of the rest of the setup and the car soo far. its been a long time since it's ran. still gotta finish the body work and paint it before it hits the road.http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b2...IMG_3039-1.jpg

From what I understand, removing the exhaust inserts and going to big does not help anything on the exhaust side. As Bernoulli's principle states, as volume increases, velocity decreases, and pressure increases. High pressure right outside the exhaust port makes for more intake dillution. Read Lynn Hanover's post # 18 http://www.nopistons.com/forums/topi..._1#entry896875 Guy is a genius.

you'd be better off with TII or REW housings, or at the least replacing the exhaust sleeves, and porting to the edges of it, squaring the bottom (opening), leaving a slight rounding on the top (closing edge), and don't forget to chamfer it.

Something like this: http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/q...h_DSCF3499.jpg

with maybe a bit more work on the closing edge.

sweet thanks, and as i said that was just a mock up of the shape, that was a trashed housing. i do plan on having the insert in when i actually do it to the good housings.

Do yourself a favor and ditch that HKS log manifold. It really sucks for spool. I don't understand why you would run the riskier high compression rotors, presumably for the sake of having a responsive engine, without trying a better manifold first?

When I switched from HKS log manifold to a true twinscroll setup (divided manifold and turbine housing) I noticed a big difference in transient response. Part throttle boost was much better, even though I had increased the size of the compressor wheel at the same time. If I downshift to raised the rpms (4-5k) it builds boost much quicker with the twin scroll setup. It was also much more responsive in 5th gear cruising on the highway. In 5th gear that HKS log made my T2 as sluggish during cruising as my old nonturbo was with aux ports wired open.

i have read and read about how bad these manifolds are but i really dont have a problem with spool, i come into positive pressure at about 1200rpm and have 14psi by 3300rpm and. and the high compression build is just for the hell of it.

I like the surge tank. Where did you get it?

OP follow this ^ and you will be very happy with the results. Removing the sleeve will do more harm than good, on one drag car here we picked up about 40hp swapping housings out with ones that had sleeves in them.

can u post pics of the anti-surge? im interested what you did

i do plan on having exh sleeves. as far as that pic looks, basically port it like that but arc the top of the port and bring the opening down a little bit more.

I ran 9.4 rotors in the Hillclimb car, but at 5K feet elevation static compression was probably closer to 9/1 than 9.4/1. Depending on what your running for tuning and fuel I see only upsides to the higher compression rotors, especially if your running meth/alky injection or e-85, lots more power is possible with increased timing made safer and as a side benefit combustion temps can actually be lower. Love E-85/E-90.

As to the porting enough has been said already.

interesting project. you've been given good advice for the exhaust ports. you should get a degree wheel and spec your template before committing to use it, if for nothing other than comparison to "proven" templates - just an idea. i'd tend to think you have more knowledge about this stuff than you made apparent. ;)

anyway, i can't wait to see you put it all together. i like to see these turbocharged-high compression projects. though i respect your decision to keep the HKS manifold, i'd just like to plant this bug in your ear, and have you at least consider going with a custom exhaust system when you've sorted the new setup out and have most of the new tune down. i think you'll owe that to yourself.

good luck.

EDIT:
oh yeah, i live in Ocala, too (back and forth from NYC), so i'll have to catch up with you sometime when i'm back in town for a while.

oh sweet man, were abouts in ocala?
the exhaust isn't that bad it a full 3.5" stainless exhaust with a apex gt spec muffler. I don't know why but i've been addicted to building high compression motors lately, built a few ka's and sr's that were high compression and really liked the turn out of them and thought i'd build up a re from some spare stuff i had laying around for shits and giggles.
all i was looking for was a simple bring the closing of the port down a couple mm's or you can go a little wider, open it a little earlier or later. not a speel about the stupid sleeve not being in when it clearing states multiple times that these were scrap housings and the actual ones have sleeves.

heres a sr20det with 10.5:1 with a gt28 and a v-mount setup i built last year. this thing was wicked, built boost basically at 1000rpm. really fun on the highway!!

The degree wheel is my next step where do I get one how do I make one?
