My Greddy T-78 died...HELP!

Long story short - My T-78 is toast. I have searched EVERYWHERE and cannot find one place that will sell me just the turbo, or knows another turbo close that will fit my manifold and downpipe...Turbochargers.com said they are out of stock, indefinately. Someone please help! :smiley_12

Dude, I don't know how you fried that turbo, those Greddy turbos are built so tough, the reliability is great, are you sure it's toast? And if so, how did this happen?

The story just got longer. :)

I’ll try not to draw it out. Car was rear-ended, took to body shop to get body fixed and nice fresh coat of stone silver sprayed. I later realize the body shop had one of those typical “I know everything there is to know about imports because I have a subscription to Super Street” guys. Anyway, the way the turbo is/was setup, the initial pipe that leaves the compressor would very lightly rub the hood. It didn’t even remove paint, just a light rubbing. This was needed, because I suck at welding and matching pipe joints etc., so the pipe was a little off for the front mount. When the turbo was positioned the way I had it, my next IC pipe joint fit perfect…or match end to end. He took it upon himself to re-clock my turbo without telling me so that it stopped rubbing the hood. However, he missed to things – 1. My second IC pipe joint, now did NOT line up flush, and 2. THE STUPID MOTHERF*CKER didn’t retighten the snap ring that holds my compressor housing on. So, after an all night binge of completing the cars entire ignition over-haul, as well as some other goodies, we head to the track. On my first run, my 60’ was pretty nice, a 1.84. Then all of a sudden! I’m making 15psi, but not going anywhere! Take the car back to the pit, and look for my blown ic pipe, or vacuum line, etc. Find none. However, I do find my snap ring, and silicone o-ring laying on the turbo’s center cartridge, and the compressor housing rattling around the wheel. The compressor wheels total diameter is now 1” smaller, due to it grounding on the housing, and I CANNOT find any body who has a rebuild for it. I’m willing to get the new turbo, but would LOVE to find one that may some what mate up to my current items, or, with minimum mods.

Now, maybe my rage is understood. :Kill1:

Got it, now that I read what happened to the turbo I shouldn't have any problem getting this taken care of. I will get a price back to you shortly.

Another reason not to go with the GReddy turbo! I'd sue the $hit out of those guys!!!

Doesnt Greddy have there turbos made by one of the larger manufacturers?? I thought i remember hearing they were made by mitsubishi. I would try and figure out what went bad on it, then try contacting the maker for parts, if thats the case.

I bought a T78 that had the same thing happen to it. The compressor cover was able to be fixed, but I had to straighted the shaft and buy a new wheel. I also purchased a rebuild kit.

Both the comp wheel and rebuild kit were purchased at:

I also did away with the large snap ring design by drilling and tapping the compressor housing and making flanges and an aluminum spacer for the back of the comp housing.

Alright fellas...thanks for all the help...it's appreciated. I am going to attempt to answer or respond to everyone in one post....here go's -

1. I now have a huge problem with Greddy and the design of the turbo...sure the dude's an ass, but with your standard "bolt & flange" design, there's really a lot less room for error.

2. I emailed RP three times, and never got a response back regarding the issue.
(just asking for the turbo only)

3. "Broadly" - I have the other shops and sites written down and will research the prices/deals they have. I will go with Sean first (obviously) provided he's in the ballpark as everybody else. (Which I'm sure he is)

That being said, we have talked briefly about going with a different setup. I am un-aware if all Greddy's are built by another, larger company. The GT35RS is a possible alternative, or really, anything else he may come up with. As long as I can get a strong 450 out of it, I don't care all that much. :dunno:

Again, appreciate the help, and look for the updates of my ass kicking court masacre of this stupid shop! :tank:

I am thinking parts of compressor hsg, and wheel are in engine, needs new engine built to spec.... crapin intercooler, needs to intercooler..... etc, etc, etc and then get a brand new engine built to the specs you want with a new turbo.

good luck either way.

Engine?

I thought the same thing as well...however, here's why I believe otherwise...

- The turbo compressor wheel seems to be bent upward/inward in a weird way. It's looks like a plate, from a side view. The intercooler was sprayed clean, nothing came out, and the oil was changed, and a maganet ran through the oil...ntohing again. Hell, the block is a built race block that has 2,200 un-beaten miles on it. I'm going with it till it dies.
