MY divided, equal lenth, mandrel bent manifold

Here are some finished pics. I will most likely vent the W/G's back to the DP eventually, but here's the manifold and a shot of the bay:

A few pics of my manifold with dual Tial 38mm gates:

Very nice, what turbo is that? Can you make another one?

carx7 10-08-03 10:55 AM

The turbo is a custom one that I had made. It's similiar in size to a T04R but this one is ball bearing among other things.

Oh and yes I could make another manifold, but it wasn't cheap... I need to work out what it would cost me to re-produce it...

eViLRotor 10-08-03 02:26 PM

Wow!!
Incedible engine bay!!! Everything else is nice too!!!

I could never comit myself to that many hours of polishing :)

carx7 10-08-03 02:37 PM

Thanks... the polishing was probably the most tedious part of the entire project. I did do everything myself though :D

RETed 10-08-03 04:11 PM

Wow, lots of money!

let's see a pic of your tools!

i want to see your welding setup...

carx7 10-08-03 06:23 PM

DOH! I should have said I do *most* everything myself. I did have to have the manifold welded... since I don't TIG :( However after this, I think I'm going to learn!!
For the manifold, I designed it in CAD to ensure proper lengths, fitment etc. I then had the flanges laser cut locally, and the tubes were mandrel bent with a set of X,Y,Z coordinates that I supplied to the shop. I then fitted the parts and took them to weld.

The parts were cheap, the welding was not, but I probably paid more that I should/could have. The next one will be cheaper and most likely jiged.

Turblown 10-08-03 08:15 PM

I can't tell from the angle of the pixs, but is one wg tapped in really early on one of the primary runners and the other is tapped in near the other end of the other runner? Dunno how well thats going to work..

88fc3sw/HX83 10-08-03 10:03 PM

EXCELLENT WORK, I'm Jealous:mad:

setzep 10-08-03 10:54 PM

The car looks awsome under the hood! I only have one question, why did you make the manifold bend right after it exits the port? Space?

Yes, the welding didn't go exactly how I planned it but..... I don't *think* that's a huge issue. Might be wrong though, we'd need a more expereinced manifold builder to chime in. I concentrating on keeping the
volumes of each chamber the same, which I think is more important.

Can anyone else comment on this?

The bend on the rear runner is to keep that runner length short enough to equal the front length. The length of the front runner was selected, but the shape was slightly determined by grip lenghts on the mandrel bending machine. and that's how the rear runner came to be. I was torn between a piece weld manifold and a single piece mandrel piece...

Turblown 10-08-03 11:20 PM

Make sure to let us know how it works out, how well it controls boost/creep ect...

carx7 10-08-03 11:27 PM

I can safely say I have zero boost creep at .7 bar. I'll post most once I get it tunned and am running "real" boost.

setzep 10-08-03 11:36 PM

After doing a piece welded manifold I don't think I'd do it another way for a few reasons. Ease of construction, can maneuver the pipes how you want them to be, less cost to make (not weld), and less time to make. Just my thoughts. I still like what you have going there:)

HWO 10-09-03 03:54 AM

I'm pretty sure that the wastegate on the rear runner would fluctuate a fair bit and also take a SH1TLOAD of heat from being so close to the exhuast port.

however it does look very pretty

Ridge Tech 10-09-03 11:35 AM

perhaps a stupid question, but why two little gates instead of one large one? Better boost control?

carx7 10-09-03 12:28 PM

Two gates maintains completely separate flow paths to the turbo. Also, with one gate not only do you need to ensure the tube length is equal for the main runners to the turbo, but also that each tube for the W/G be equal to eachothet AND to the main runners lengths... so you have to have 4 equal length tubes instead of two.

Lastly, the two gate will theoretically flow ~36% more than a single 46mm Tial.... which plays into my turbine housing selection being perhaps a bit smaller than most would suggest... etc

Destroy 10-09-03 03:50 PM

I really like your design. Similar to Marco's manifold for his GT42. Lemme know how much you could reprduce it for and uhh it should fit an FD right?

88fc3sw/HX83 10-09-03 11:09 PM

Yeah, I love that manifold! How much? :)

carx7 10-10-03 04:49 PM

I'm not sure on pricing for selling it, since I"m not exactly sure what the first one cost... but I would expect re-productions to be less. Give me a week or so to look into it since I'm taking a break from the car after the work I've done over the last few months in trying to get it to SS6. I'm tired :D

I can't say on the FD for sure either. There is a local guy that I might be able to check it out on. Even if it doesn't I was thinking of making a simliar manifold for them... just haven't done it yet... I am also taking into consideration the critiques that I have recieved.

93redFD 10-10-03 06:18 PM

I have small quest about the finish of the ss. How long will that polished finish stay on there? btw the car looks good.

shawnk 10-11-03 09:22 PM

I think it would start to rainbow immediately...

Beautiful engine bay carx7. What is your plan for the car. Show it? Track it? Both?

Yeah, it pretty much turns colors the first time you run the engine for any period of time.

Shawn

Thanks. I just want to drive it :) I will do a little show, and probalby lots of daily driving with some track use. I built in intending to take lots of pics and will probalby have some professinal ones made when I am completley finished. But then I intend to drive it anyday that that the weather is nice. Don't have to worry about rain/snow/ice in Tucson for the most part.

I just don't belive in building a car to sit in the garage and be trailered around... just me personally. So I'll take the pics to show what it is now and maintain it as best I can for a car that is driven regularly.

Crusader_9x 10-12-03 06:01 PM

can u take some more pics of it on the car? im curious as to se if it would fit with the abs unit in there as well.
