Melted Gt42 turbine

Yep, it is definately possible. Pulled the turbo apart and this is what i found

I have no idea what the EGT's where to do this.... Another lesson learned from not tunning the car... and beating the shit out of it for half a year... car had water injection, dont know if that adds to EGT's, but i used antilag for launching too

Can you get Iconel wheels for these turbo's?

hondahater 09-24-07 10:43 PM

you sure thats not from apex seal ownage? The water injection should cool down ait's well as egts. Maybe someone else can chime in though.

zbrown 09-24-07 10:52 PM

It thought so too... but that turbo was new when it went on and nothing on the engine + turbo was touched for 6 months, and the motor still runs well

though it has had its shit pushed in the last couple months

The "black soot" would imply the engine was actually running rich, so I would tend to blame debris for the damage?

Pump gas?
Race gas?

Water injection would tend to keep EGT's lower...

Two-step?
Flat shift?
What kinda ignition timing?

damn bro that thing isnt very old. sorr for your loss

eflove 09-24-07 11:31 PM

I have one that looks the same way. I have been told you can not replace the wheel. You have to replace the center section. Gerretts web page says $2099 for a new CHRA and to call for a replacement one. I think that means a reman. let me know if you end up fixing it and what you did.

CarbonR1 09-24-07 11:52 PM

That wheel is already made of inconel...

Busted7 09-24-07 11:59 PM

A friend melted his like that the tips over heat and melt and then tear off. It seemed he liked to two step to much!

Turblown 09-25-07 12:10 AM

I've seen that from using antilag. I've seen cars in the 2000+ F egt range not melt turbine wheels...

ZAN_TUNING 09-25-07 12:51 AM

uh oh, where's peter at? :D

that sucks tho man, you just gonna replace the cartridge or step up even bigger? haha

crispeed 09-25-07 01:25 AM

Some GT42's and their knock off versions are known for that. Has happened to me a couple of times. Sometimes I wonder if it's really the material they claim it's made from. None of the above setups seen over 1650deg F measured before the turbo. It seem to always happen with applications that do a lot of WOT 5th gear runs. Same applications didn't have that problem with Mitsubishi turbos.
Had a very short arguement with a supplier about the problem. Once I showed proof from others having the same problem the turbine wheel was exchanged without anymore questions! :)
I've heard rumors about certain materials being obtain from China but those are just rumors!

So, can someone verify that this is supposed to be an iconel wheel? I have the genuine garrett part # right here.

the car has never actually been tuned, just enough to run well under boost... it will just make my wideband read 10.- which is out of range. and it is a varicool progressive water water injection kit that i was spraying 50/50 with. Timming was not that aggressive at 15psi it was around 12-15 IIRC.... on 89 pump gas

I live the complete boonies during the summer, and everyday after work i would beat the shit out of that car..... it would see multiple full 4th gear pulls at night sometimes full 5th.... but i mean it ran STRONG. boost was from 12-16psi

I dont know what do to do..... the reason i took it apart is becasue my car got broke into and my haltech E8 got stolen along with the thieves just about getting away with the complete turbo+manifold setup... luckily they were too retarded to realize that the WG was keeping everything from just falling off... and so in the end just took the compressor housing.....yeah my thoughts too

I will probably install an egt gauge and figure out what is going on with the shitty turbo instead of wrecking a new one.... and this is a journal bearning turbo

being just journal bearning cant i just get a new wheel/shaft? then balance it?

This is what they were trying to take...

If you guys see this compressor cover up forsale or a haltech e8 out of the midwest please let me know

what ass holes! hope you get everything worked out.

VTECthis 09-25-07 09:53 AM

to me it looks like you spit an apex seal through it.....do a compression check.

SavannaAE 09-25-07 10:09 AM

Good God man! Thats mad.

Hope the motor's still happy.

I've got a Turbonetics T67 for sale. :)

dregg100 09-25-07 11:58 AM

sorry this doesnt help you out, but how bad was spool with the journal bearing?

zbrown 09-25-07 12:29 PM

not bad at all...even with a fucked turbine

positive pressure at about 3.5k and full boost by 5.5k

when something that size comes online ... trust me you know

A7X 09-25-07 02:02 PM

zbrown i love everything youve done with your FC and i wish i had the materials to fit a 42R into my engine bay! get that baby running again!

coblepots 09-25-07 02:50 PM

Dang, sorry to hear that happened! It is possible to have very very high EGT's when your car has not been tuned, hot enough to melt a turbine blade. Unburnt hydrocarbons will finish they're combustion process while in the exhaust manifold, increasing both temperature and pressure. I hope you get it worked out! Make sure you adjust your timing and tune you fuel maps before you get on the road again!
