Intercoolers: Custom or Brands?
 

Would you guys rather go with a custom 4" front mount or an aftermarket like Greddy? And how thick is the core on a Greddy?

The Greddy intercooler kit I have has a 3" thick core. I was going to go with a total custom intercooler kit but for the price I paid for my kit it wasn't worth all the headaches I would get trying to make my own.

My guess would be that it depends on your situation. If you're making a custom turbo setup, go with a custom IC. If you're going with a turbo kit, like from Greddy, then go with the Greddy IC kit to go with it.

I know my FMIC is costing me only $500 and is just a tad smaller than the Greddy 3-row. IMHO $500 is alot more logical than $1200+ for damn near the same thing...

get a custom sized one for your application, talk to someone who knows what there doing to make the right size and flow characteristics. plus a 4" core doesnt nessesarly mean better cooling. i piad 450 for mine and its the schiznit :D, and well no one makes a innercooler kit for a first gen

If you can weld aluminum, just buy a Spearco core and make your own endtanks and piping.

Yes, and unless that 4" core is "high-flow" (aka poor efficiency), it will not work well at street and drag race speeds. You will probably be happier with a 2-3.5" core. When shopping for intercooler cores, be sure to check the efficiency and pressure drop ratings.

Anything over 3" is usually useless just added weight.Keep in mind almost 90% of your cooling will happen on the surface that faces the airstream and most of that closer to where it enter's the core. you would need either extremely high pressure air in front of,or extremely low pressure behind of the intercooler for the backside of a 4" intercooler to be doing anything worth it's weight.You could have a intercooler made for any car so it don't matter if it's a 1st or 3rd gen. I agree with above if you buy a specific turbo kit it's easier to buy the intercooler that's got that kit in mind. You can save money having one made but unless you understand whats involved(fitment ,flow) the kit is your safe bet.;)
