Installing a turbo kit...
How many of you installed your own turbo kit and how hard was it? I'm looking for advice and experiences with them and do-it-yourselfers...

If you can remove your old turbos, then you can install a single turbo kit.

Originally posted by 13BAce Just make sure that you install all of the gaskets and take care of all of the oil and/or water lines. Make sure you have some copper silicone and maybe some teflon tape or paste. It's a pretty simple job if you have a good set of tools. Removing your stock turbos will be alot harder than installing your new kit. Which kit are you going with? |
Originally posted by FastX7 I'm looking at the XS T04S kit... I've heard good stuff about them so far. |
I did a search on it and from what everyone says, it's the way to go. Alot of people say it's better than the T78 under 5-600rwhp and I'm not looking for anything over 500 for a while. How was the install of the T04S kit? Anything that bugged you about putting it in, or does it fit like a glove?

Anything that bugged you about putting it in, or does it fit like a glove? I have experience with the T-78. I'm running it on an undivided HKS manifold, and it makes full boost in the 4-4.5K range. The turbo is a little "lazy" until about 8-10 PSI when the boost goes up to 17 PSI(my max boost right now) instantly. I'm using a Profec for my boost control |
I'd like to have something that comes on around 3.5-4k, I haven't really heard what the spool time is for the T04S. How much would a Garrett BB turbo "kit" of about the same size cost? By kit, I mean, with the turbo, all parts together.

I personally think the "lazy" turbo has to do more with your manifold design. I'll bet that you'll spool-up fast and get better responce from a fully divided manifold. This is where the ports are separated all the way to the turbine wheel and the wastegate is feed from both the exhaust ports. |
I'm running the T04S, its fully spooled at 4k if your running 14psi. RP put mine in and they said that it went in pretty easily. I made 333hp on 12lbs and a SMIC, Ill have my car dynoed again next friday. I blew a seal 2 months ago and I finally get it back next tues. :) I'll be rolling out of there with a RP street port engine and a apex'i FMIC. I think I'm going to make @least 400  at the wheels. If your interested in pics or a chart send me a pm and I'll send it to you or let you know how it turned out.
Ryker P.S. T04S has a polished compressor housing. Only bad thing is my car was so loud (open air wastegate and N1 dual catback) I couldn't hear my stereo so I ended up w/ a fosgate 12" in the back so now all i hear is bump bump waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa bump thump bump lol. |

I think the new HKS cast manifold is now divided. I know for a fact that the XS manifold is divided. This is alot cheaper than having someone fabricating it for you.
