Installed MSD 6A, now breaking up after 5K
 

I never had any ignition problems before, I got the MSD to see if it would help at all. Now it breaks up at about 5K, and is running like shit under WOT. Cruising is fine. I checked the spark, looks good, I ran the ground to the chassis, then added one to the rotor housing which didnt help. Im about to say fuck it and take it out, like I said it ran fine before. Just wondering if anyone had a similar problem with an MSD 6A.

Describe your setup more. What turbo, what boost, what plugs?

Honestly though I had a breakup with an MSD box on just my leading. I switched to HKS twin power (which does leading and trailing) and my blowout disappeared.

running distributor or cas?

I have...

Microtech LT8S
stock CAS
NGK BUR9EQP leading
NGK BUR9EQ trailing
factory NGK wires
60-1 @ 14-15 psi

again, it runs fine idling or crusing, just breaks up, pulls pathetic, power drops off big time after 5K

Just got a reply in the rotary performance section, he says the factory igniter has to be bypassed? WTF? I thought an MSD 6A was as easy to install as an HKS Twin Power?

they are installed in a different way. On the 6A, the wires are cut--the signal is intercepted. http://fc3spro.com/TECH/HOWTO/CDI/cdi.html

On the Twin Power, the wires are spliced in and not cut.

i run the msd with these pushing 600 with no problems



imo from what ive seen those msd boxes produce way to much spark for the stock coils



p.s. if your near my power (the one on the left 478) you can get ngk platinum (10's heat range) spark plugs $35 each at napa

Try this: Stock FD 93-up coils will fail with MSDs prematurely due to the MSD making the coils too hot, they overheat and fail. Replace the Leading coil with one from an second generation FC T2 RX7 and you'll be fine. I went through this time and time again until I did that, no more problems since. NOTE: You should only use an MSD ignition on the Leading side only, makes no sense to bother with the Trailing side of the ignition since it won't increase power at all.

that depends on ur a/f ratio I saw a 50hp loss (wheels) w/ not runnin the msd trailing spark, but my setup is way different than urs or others, i'm runnin 10.9-11.1 a/f so that might have something to do w/ it. :scratch:

I'm running the same afr's at peak and haven't had an issue with loosing any power.

my crane high 6's were doin the same thing, problem was on the dial rev limiters on the boxes were set to 5g i didnt thing it would matter as it was getting the pulse from the microtech when to fire :-S

okay should i buy the MSD 6a or 6al? im going to run 3 msd boxes and 4 msd coils. i know that the 6al has a rev limiter and ignition retard. i want to run 30lbs of boost with 50/50 meth/alcohol injection. do rotaries need retarded timing under boost or will my tuner take care of that via the power fc? thanks guys!

Ive since been cranking up the boost, shortened the intercooler piping, installed some heat sheilding, some other stuff...

Im running 17-18 psi (with 50/50 water/alcohol injection) and still running stock TII coils, still no breakup, running great, pulling strong...I still want to get an HKS twin power, but so far so good!!

what did you change, the wiring in series instead of splicing?

Not running any ignition amp, stock coils and ignitors
