Ignition setup.........Is the stock ignition "OK" w/ my single turbo???
 

Hey guys. Im plan on running 20lbs of boost this summer at drag racing events. I've "heard" that the stock ignition won't cut it running the Haltech. Is the true? I have the HKS Twin Power. Is this enough? I want to be safe and don't mind spending the money if its necessary.

i am running 20 psi right now with the stock ignition, we actually took my b&m new volt off because it keeps frying the coils, my tuner says stock ignition is good for 600rwhp with no problems

Does this hold true for 3rd genns too?

go MSD go MSD ;) stock FD with twin power should be fine. i have stock ignition with three msd6a's :)

I ran 21-22psi with a Haltech w/stock ignition. Made something like 487 rwhp at the boost level. Everything was fine at higher boost levels with 10.5 plugs being regapped.

I haven't seen a street FD with a single turbo set up do well around here. There are many of you guys out there with good set ups (ignition in account), but no good time slips. There's that guy with the SI blue FD doing low 10's a month or 2 ago in the mags. He's from Jersey. Maybe he has the answers...

I'm sure you should have no problems with your HKS amp. My mechanic also says that the stock 3rd gen system is up to task for those levels. I have a similar setup to yours but was running a crane hi6 on my leading, until it failed on me.
Along with the B&M new volt I've also heard off people frying their coils with the TwinPower. Has anyone out there have their coils go on them because of an ignition upgrade?

If you don't mind spending a little money you could go with enough MSD to fire through all 4 channels and then get 4 msd coils...at the very least you could free up a little horsepower and calm your conscience

Does anyone have any direct evidence that the Jacobs, HKS, B&M will fry the coils or do you happen to find a bad coil after installing them?

My leading coil went at around 40k mi with no ignition upgrade. It seems like failed coils on the FD are quite common regardless of milage or whether there is an aftermarket add on to the system. I believe the mounting location with a high amount of heat and vibration are major contributors to the problem but that's just an assumption.

I wonder if these aftermarket devices just help uncover a coil that is already shot. I found it hard to diagnois my bad leading coil, I'd get break-up above 5 or 6k rpm but not consistently - the car would pull to redline perfectly on one day and the next day it would be cutting (of course, it would cut up when you find a good race).

Just some ideas to ponder. If there is direct evidence, please share.

a while ago when Ari's car was featured in Turbo, he only had an ignition amp, and plugs/wires. he ran a 9.62 at that time, with that setup. but that was over a year ago. i dont know what he has now.

I run standard T2 coils on my car with no amplifier or MSD etc etc. I have run 22psi on pump fuel and made close to 500rwhp and had no ignition break up what so ever. This was done on B10EGV plugs. I have also run 22psi on C16, run 11.1 @ 125 on tune that was fairly rich and still experienced no ignition break up. This was on BUR9EQ plugs.

I was considering putting an MSD on the leading side only but the prohibitive cost for little/no gains as well as having HITman and Justin from Haltech Sydney saying its not worth it, I didn't get it.

For high end use such as drag racing, a full CDI setup is worth it for the high boost being run. For the street, I think there are better things to spend your money on.

gotta get rid od the stock coil, they're junk, any other coil will do.

We have yet to find a real good ignition we like, but ignition is very very important, we change plugs after every 4 passes with fresh ones.

I currently use the stock configuration but I am disappointed in the stock coil. I have killed two so far and while the second one was dying with low output.. I was down 100 hp.

Anyways, Matt says that the T2 coil kicks ass... that will be my next upgrade.

I removed my dead Crane and a brand new Jacobs... it didn't really seem to help after I switched to the Haltech.

If, and I mean if, your stock ignition is working 100% correctly and you have racing plugs you can pull out 400 to 450 RWHP-from 3rd gen ignition. I think many people have ignition problems and don't even realize it. I know my ignition problem shows up on the dyno, but it is hard to tell when driving the street. I am also helping a friend troubleshoot his problem that is the same way. Also most people don't run racing plugs-they can be quite expensive. Racing plugs help you get the most energy out of the stock system. A Jacobs box increases the energy in the system. I thought the HKS box was a good unit, but after some discussion on the unit, it appears it might not really add that much, if any, energy to the system. I think it will help at idle and part load, but maybe not at higher loads. That is where the Jacob's, MSD, and Crane systems are good.

Recent example: Chuck Westbrook has been doing some tuning with his car and found that the stock ignition was fine with his 300 hp something twin setup-even without the Crane. With the Crane it was smoother and provides a little bit more insurance that the spark will happen.

I went and read up on the system that KD is selling now, is anybody using it now?

I thought coils was either working or not working how can you tell if your coil is working fine. My car is very sloppy on low end power.

Can I change all coils to MSD blaster coils and have an improvement?

Can anyone refer a shop that can wire in a full MSD (4coil) and (4amps) system correctly. (No spaghetti wiring please.)
