I got an idea. Is this stupid or am I on to something?
So I've always entertained the idea of building a twin turbo setup on my FD. I was browsing E-bay today and came across this manifold.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda...ht_2743wt_1167 The seller claims that they will weld any kind of flange that you want for the wastage and turbo, including a mitsubishi flange. I live in Cleveland Ohio and we have a large DSM community here which gives me access to alot of DSM parts. What I was thinking was using this manifold to run two EVO3 16G turbos and a Tial 44mm wastegate to control the boost. The internal wastegates on the 16G's could be easily welded shut and I could make a custom downpipe for both turbos. Because of my connections with the DSM community in Cleveland I could set this up for a relatively low price. I'm looking for a responsive setup that will net somewhere around 430whp. Am I just crazy or could this work. Thoughts? |
My thoughts are that with twins you're going to run out of room quickly and that packaging the turbos in the car is going to be rather particular. Setting Taiwanese manifold construction quality aside for the moment, I would bet that this manifold fits with a particular turbo in a particular orientation. I would not expect it to fit well with just any turbo that you threw at it. I would expect to have to do modifications. At that point (if it was me) I would wonder why I wasn't making the manifold in the first place.
If I were going to go twins like you're talking about I would seriously consider using ported internal waste gates. At that point the manifold construction gets even easier. |
I'm actually making something similar using TiAL housings and twin gates.

Hey Sean, do you feel there's any benefit to running twin turbos independently vs. a properly setup divided single turbo?

Sizing is critical and in my opinion very few benefits. The window for having twins perform better than a single is much smaller than the window for having a single perform better than twins if that makes sense. I'm doing it because a customer wants something different. We played with it years ago and running a single just made more sense. Howard's car was a very well thought out and well worked setup my guess is he will be just as happy if not more so with half the turbo's on his new setup.

id LOVE for someone to let me build them a twin turbo setup...30psi by 2600rpm would be the goal :)

silly newb :) you have plenty of traction and its extremely smooth....i recently helped build a turbo kit for a vehicle at the shop i work at. ive been itching to try the same turbo setup on a rotary..

I've seen a dozen FDs with independant twin turbo setups, even 3 rotors with 3 turbos. They fit, routing the piping to the i/c and ducting in fresh air is the fun part. Check out my build thread in the n.w. section for ideas and follow along on my build. Sean- that's one lucky customer, for having you build his setup!!!:noyes:
