How do I know if I am buying a turbo Rx-7?

I know this may be the stupidest question ever written. I know someone will say, "simply look under the hood and find the turbo." Well I haven't even seen the car, besides what was in the local autotrader. The ad did not mention a turbo, it did say it was rotary....so i dunno myself. I am planning on purchasing it, due to the sheer fact of its speed. The car is a 1986 Mazda RX-7.

I am new to rotary engines, and before buying the car (to blow my fellow racer buds outta the water) i would really need to know some numbers, such as:

0-60 of a 1986 RX-7 and a Hp estimate of a none turbo and single turbo Rx-7. Then I would also need to know if there is any way to find out by looking at one to tell if its Turbo'ed or not? Like a hood-vent of some sorts?

Let me know, the car is fairly cheap, and has mid-range mileage.

Peace out,
Polish Paul

OK:

It is not a turbo. The first turbo model of the 2nd gens came out in 87. You can tell by the hood scoop, front mount intercooler under the hood, mirrors being body colored and having a hole in them, and by saying TURBO II. For all you times go to General Automotive and look at I think the 2nd thread down titled something like "Performance Times" and it has a list of alot of cars times. Or you can check out www.car-stats.com

If it has a hood scoop it should be a Turbo.

So if lets say it isn't a turbo, what are the hp figures? And can the single rotary be made extravagently fast...or fast enough to keep up with say a Turbo Si?

Jedon 06-28-02 12:11 PM

Anything can be made fast, it's just a matter of money :-D
It's generally considered much easier to swap a TII engine in than to try and mount a turbo on an N/A engine.

And buying a turbo car is even easier than the swap. I've found that a turbo car is sometimes as affordable as a NA if you look hard enough. Hell, I've had 2 of them given to me, and bought one for $500 before.
Don.

You definitely seem like the type that needs to get the turbo first. You'll be 100x happier, trust me I had an NA first.
