Holset turbo

Today as i took a break at work i noticed one of our guys had bought the new Sport Compact Car mag... In it was some 240sx that the guy made a turbo kit out of a Holset turbo... Then i realized that i work on trucks that have Holsets in them all the time. ( Im a diesel mechanic for the Airforce...)

Anyway i could have sworn that i saw that some people had used them on a FC in here. Just wondering what kind of numbers these put down? How quick they spool ect. I did search but just found a debate on if it was a KKK turbo or not.

I'm running a HX35 or a shane racing stage II. Its realy not a bad turbo when comparing it to other turbos on the http://dyno.zeroglabs.com/dyno.php web page.

While there has been talk of the turbo not being very reliable, i've never had a problem with it.

If you compare my dyno sheets with others, please keep in mind the differences between different dyno's. CJ

The HX35 is one of the turbos that has been used on the Dodge Cummins. These things routinely go 300k miles. No reason why they shouldn't be thought of as reliable.

AFgreasemnky 12-31-05 05:05 PM

Yeah we have several Dodges with a Cummins Turbo Diesel in them and i dont recall ever having to replace a turbo on one.
CJ, what kind of manifold did you use? And what is the spool on this turbo?

Anyone else with experiance on this turbo?

mr2foryou 12-31-05 05:45 PM

My mechanic is running an Holset HX-50 on his car. Very big. Greddy T88 size.

a friend of mine is running a h1e holset, spools rediculously fast for the the size of the hotside it has..

pp13bnos 12-31-05 11:28 PM

The manifold is a XS engineering cast manifold. As for spool, in 3rd gear it reaches full boost between 4,000, and 4,500. It would probably be a little sooner in 4th gear.

The car made 400rwhp@16psi, before I installed a Groundzero LIM, abd put on 3.4" ID exhaust (It use to be 2.8" ID) and a Greedy elbo. While, I don't know how much hp it will put down, I'm expecting a little more hp. This is with the stock motor with 50k miles or so.

Just be sure and use a good sized blow off valve on it. Diesel engines, since they are not throtled, don't have to put their turbos to work on surge, and thus their thrust washers don't have to work as hard as on a gas engine running with a not large enough bov or none at all.

AFgreasemnky 01-01-06 12:35 PM

What size BOV would you recomend?

And anyone have one of these on a FC?

EFINI_RX-7_RZ 01-01-06 04:30 PM

I personally like the TiAL bov, it looks like it can flow huge amounts of air. Also, haven't seen anything else as big as their's. People like to buy bovs based on the sound they make, I mean, PLEASE! This is a performance part, not a rice or show part, what matters most is function, not bling!

FB II 01-01-06 05:23 PM

yea anyone run an H1E on a stock TII block?

ErnieT 01-01-06 05:34 PM

The SR Motorsports Stage 1-5 turbo kits are all Holeset turbo's. I used to have the Stage 2. They are big pieces of shits for turbo's. Mine had to be rebuilt every 4 months till I got fed up with it.

FB II 01-01-06 06:43 PM

damnit that sux :( thanks for the heads up!

AFgreasemnky 01-01-06 06:54 PM

I looked at SR's site looks a bit pricey for useing a Holset turbo

Everything on that site is a rip off.

AFgreasemnky 01-01-06 07:46 PM

Good to know!

ROTORHP 01-02-06 12:24 AM

I heard that those turbos had sticky wastegates sometimes but they make an upgraded actuator to fix it. I think it's Banks that makes them.

That is no bearing here. All the turbo's we run are externally gated.

ROTORHP 01-02-06 12:19 PM

Hmm I thought all the ones off the deisels were internal? Thats why I turned away from them... or do you mean that you can get them external, but not off a cummins?

autopaul 01-25-06 04:56 PM

so there are actually people here running these on their 7s?
everyone keeps saying that the hotside is too restrictive and that it bogs the motor.. i gues thats just internet "experts" for ya.

i think there is confusion about hy35 and the hx35,

the hy35 series comes off automatics, and has a hotside housing of 9cm squared,

whereas the hx35 series has a hotside housing with 12cm sq.

i was wondering if one of these turbos would work on my 12a,, (i know the compressor side is pretty big.. but before you shun the idea.. look at all the ford and turbo dodge guys running the hy and hx turbos on 4 bangers..

hey PP13bnos im wondering if you have any pics of your setup,, and if its still running welll..

i wondered what year cummins your turbo came off, the one i am looking at getting looks like this

http://photobucket.com/albums/b345/a...urboholset.jpg

its off a 04 cummins ram 5spd.

my boss had this turbo off his truck just for an upgrade, and its got barely any ks on it.. so hes gonna give me a great deal on it..

J-Rat 01-25-06 06:41 PM

G-rat here in phoenix runs an H1E.

pp13bnos 01-25-06 07:59 PM

I have some pics laying around, but let me get some fresh ones later on tonight.

The turbo is fine, and realy does'nt run to bad. I plan on finishing the 3.5" DP/MP then having the motor tuned for 17psi. Hopefully it will be done by mid March, so I can hopefully make the season opener at Woodburn dragstrip. I would realy like to run some 125+mph passes. CJ

AFgreasemnky 01-26-06 08:51 AM

J-rat whats your opinion of the turbo? You rode in his car before?

caredden 01-26-06 10:00 AM

I am running an H1E on my car as well. I had my car tuned by Steve Kan at the end of November and he told me that my car had a little more lag than comparable turbos. I have my dyno chart at home, so I cannot speak to the numbers right off of the top of my head. In comparing my numbers to other charts stored in the dyno pack computer, I was about 600-800 rpm behind other turbos, so a little bit of lag.

Also, I had a boost leak that would appear at the 6,000 rpm mark when I was having Steve tune it at 14psi, thus I would lose power after 6,000 rpms. At 6,000 rpms I made 353 to the wheels (using dyna pack). In looking at comparable dyno charts, I figured I should have gotten at least another 50 horsepower from 6,000 rpm to 7,200 rpms. I am still in the process of trouble shooting the boost leak (I suspect a bad coupler).

The turbo is huge (I mean big!) when it sits in your engine bay. I think it is equivalent to a T-72. Hindsight being 20/20, I probably would NOT have bought this turbo. I think it is capable of making big power at higher boost, but that is NOT what I had in mind when going single. I want something a tad more responsive for street use. I am not looking to run 19 or 20 psi on my motor. I am looking for 14-16 psi.

On a good note, I have not had to rebuild like Ernie T had too; however, it has only been about 2,000 miles so far (fingers crossed).

Just my $.02

Charlie

I personally thought the spool was great in G-Rats car. He had taken the H1E wheel and gotten a bigger hotside mated to it, then had the assembly balanced. I think his total investement in the turbo was less then six bills. Seriously though, it spools like a madman! I will have to get the specs so we can bump them up against caredden's turbo to see if there are any differences that would explain his laggy spool.
