HKS EVC IV and Greddy Wastegate

Hey everyone, I'm working on installing my new used HKS EVC IV boost controller. I've got it wired in, and mounted. And I hate to say it but I can't figure out the boost lines. I mounted a greddy profec B before and it was a sinch. But the directions are confusing.

Here is my existing setup

Here is the instruction page, I am trying to use the diagram on the left for an external waste gate
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/h...stallation.jpg

It doesn't make any sense to me. If the line the my manual BC controlled everything with connects to the EVC and pre-intercooler pressure, wouldn't it just open up?

The only thing I can think of, is that the wastegate in the EVC instructions opposite ports when compared to the wastegate that I have (came with the greddy t-78 kit.

Also, I do not have any barbs pre-intercooler, is it safe to just go to manifold pressure?

Thanks in advance.

those pics are too small to read. post a link to a full size pic

I recently bought the same EBC and even though I haven't installed it yet the instructions seem fairly straight foward.

Port 1 (left) -Goes to a nipple on the manifold after the TB ex. one of the ports on the pass side of the UIM

Port 2 (middle) Run this line to the top port on your WG (the port you currently vent to the atmosphere.

Port 3 (left) "T" this line to the side port of your WG & to the compressor housing of your turbo (or as close as you can get the the comp. housing)

Hope this helps.

^ Port #1 (#1 as described in the instructions) is the right line, Port #2 is the left, and port #3 is the middle, if you are looking at where the hoses terminate at the stepper motor itself.

I've never personally used the EVC IV, but I would follow the instructions exactly as HKS specifies, even if you have to tap the intercooler piping for a pressure source.

There's a good chance the HKS boost control algorithm expects port #1's pressure reading (taken from after the throttle plates) to be higher than port #2's pressure reading (before the intercooler). Also, the amount of boost the side port sees affects how quickly the wastegate opens and thus how likely you are to keep boost under control. Running both ports to manifold pressure may affect boost control or boost response. I would give HKS the benefit of the doubt here. Self-adjusting systems can be finicky and are designed to work within specific parameters.

Your MBC works in a completely different way than the EVC. It mechanically interrupts the air signal pushing the wastegate open on the side port, thus raising boost by having the wastegate crack open later. The EVC continuously pushes the wastegate open using the side port, but counteracts that force by pushing the wastegate closed during spool with the top port. Then it does some kind of feedback monitoring with the hose that reads manifold pressure after the throttle plates. It's the same basic routing as a Profec would have on an external wastegate actually.

Thanx for the correction:icon_tup:, even with the larger pic posted I can't read.:icon_no2:

Thanks Project D and arghx. The description of how the manual controller works compared to the EVC makes it all clear. I didn't know that they worked differently. I'll set it up as per the instructions.

Thanks.
