Help my blown GT35R???

2 Attachment(s)
Just like the title says guys. I bought my GT35R from a forum member, after I got it apart I found that something had gone through the turbine blades. I had the engine apart too but all seals were intact so im not sure what happened. Anyway, it wasnt a SHADY deal so im not here to complain. What i do need to know is what my options are at this point?

1. rebuild it? It came from Aspec so i was thinking about sending it in. what other companies can rebuilt it?

2. please only speak from FIRSTHAND experience. Not your brothers mother step-kid knew this guy.....

3. Buy a new one (shiver)?

Pretty much i want to rebuild it and do it right so i need to know who to go through??????

I have some pictured of the fan blades attached

No No NO its not the guys fault. I knew the engine was blown and possibly the turbo.

Unfortunalty you will need a whole new center section. ( cant get just turbine wheel and shaft ) for the ball bearing option of the GT35R ( to my knoledge ).

So you will probably have to purchase a new CHRA .

I had to replace my chra when mine got damaged. Every shop I called said there was no parts available for gt series turbos. A-spec said they could replace the wheel for 700, but a new chra was 899. So, I went with the new chra. Cheapturbo.com was the cheapest place I found.

Are you sure that something went through the exhaust? It looks like it could be another problem.

How does your turbine housing look? Is there evidence of the turbine wheel hitting the housing?

If so, you'd need a new turbine housing along with nearly everything else new. It might not be worth saving honestly.

Komodo1982 02-12-07 10:54 PM

The housing looks primo: no scratching that i can see. the rear rotor on the enging had embedded rmetal particles in it and the housing was trashed, but all the seals seemed to be intact.

I would send it to Majestic turbo...I know alot of people on this board use them and a friend personally...They do a great job and warrenty their work i believe.

Very similar damage occurred on the race car's GT35R, when comparing a price for the center section and turbine it was decided to just buy a whole new turbo.

In our case the engine was intact and I suspect the blades actually could not withstand the sustained EGT. I've heard of this happening before to others as well.

Komodo1982 02-13-07 12:29 AM

I would not say the EGT was to blame because the rear housing had internal damage as well as the rotor. I think something was ingested.

So you're saying you bought an entire CHRA instead of a wheel, or the ENTIRE turbo?

call atp turbo. a new gt35r is $1400. the chra should be about half of that. here is the link:

We ended up buying a whole new turbo as there was decent amount of shaft play as well.

What happened to that thing? Do people not use filters? Looks like someone sucked up a couple rocks.

Garrett is doing a special, I just replaced my GT35r.

Call any Garrett authorized rebuilder. As long as the center cartridge and 1 wheel is good, they can give you a whole CHRA (everything except the housings) for $400.

I just got mine swapped out for a brand new one for $400 via www.turbosdirect.com

It had a chipped exhaust wheel.

Goodluck.
