Help me reduce turbo lag.

Ok i am a newb to this turbo stuff so I dont know exactly what to search for.

I dont know exactly what turbo it is, I think its a hybrid, anyway at the dyno i put down 347hp at 15psi problem is it has major lag!!! Is there any way to reduce this without getting a new turbo? Would an electronic boost controller help?

If a new turbo is the answer then which one should I get for fast spool and a 350ish hp?

Turblown 04-26-07 05:11 PM

A good electronic boost controller will help, bigger free flowing exhaust, better exhaust manifold, better tuning, properly built engine, etc...

what do you call massive lag? maybe since youre new to it you think what is actually normal lag is massive...

kevin.

i've heard from friend that had one that hybrids can be laggy. just throwing that out there.

i run a gt32 and it spools very quick! 400rwhp capable FAAAAA SHoo

Well let me give you some more info.

I got the car for a steal from a guy who didnt know much about it, he said he never worked on it, he just took it to his mechanic for everything.

Anyway I ran a TII into the ground already so I knew all the problems to look for... I bought it... took it to my mechanic and had it look over.

Needless to say the car was very well put together even the electrical was all redone.

After the car got a clean bill of health I got it dyno tuned, it put down 347hp at 15psi and could handle more (so said my mechanic said)

The down pipe on my car is a massive 4" which runs to a 3" exhaust.

if I punch it while rolling in 1st it doesn't seem to really do anything till about 5.500rpms, but when it gets there it takes off like a rocket easily spinning the tires if I am not careful

you need to check compression in you cylinder heads. mayeb a carbon fiber turbo would help with lag

Whoa, this is either a bad joke or someone wandered in from the honda forums.

Turblown 04-26-07 08:29 PM

Do a compression check. In my experience most large hybrids are very " laggy", just another reason not to use them...

neodriftout 04-26-07 09:17 PM

Compression check on the motor or turbo? I think i am going to get a EBC then later on swap out the turbo.

Any tips or suggestion on turbos?

We need specific info on the set up and what it is doing to help :)

Who was the previous owner and mechanic,? We may already be familiar with the car.

I also have a large hybrid on my car and don't get into the real powerband untill 5,000rpm, though it gets full 15psi boost before 3,500rpm. It is ported rotary powerband not lag in my case.

Is the turbo a stock TII based hybrid or a T3/T4 hybrid?
If stock hybrid is it based on S4 ('87-88) or S5 ('89-91) exhaust side?
What motor? S4, S5, 3rd gen, cosmo?
Ported motor?
What intake manifold?
What intercooler?

In 4th gear pulling from beloow 2,000rpm when do you see full boost?

I might snap some pics for you guys. The guy a bought the car off of was clueless and its been about a year since I had it dyno'd and checked over.

what I do know is

It is an s5 motor and the intercooler is a front mount and the intake mani has two additional injectors plumbed into that is controlled ny a haltech f5.

My cars power band is at around 5000 also it seems, however I dont know if it reaches full boost before3500 though i am sure it is probably close.

Is there anyway to know if the motor has been ported without opening her up???

I have owned this car for a year and a half know and have been on many long trips and she still fires right up and drives with no problems.

Oh one last thing one of the irons is stamped Tino Racing 13B, I suppose that is the shop that built it which is not around anymore if what the guy i bought the car and my mechanic says is true.

bobybeach 04-29-07 05:35 PM

what size compressor combos have you guys run to have laggy set ups on hybrids?
I had a couple hybrids in the past with good responce. Ive run h trim to4b and v trim with stock untouched turbine wheels.
I think the clipping turbine turbine wheels on hybrids is were things turn to mud?

NissanConvert 05-09-07 02:43 PM

w/o knowing more we're all speculating. Find out when you get how much boost, find out what kind of turbo it is, manifold, etc.

hondahater 05-09-07 03:17 PM

are we talking about a stock hybrid turbo? If so then the manifold is going to be stock. The turbo's I've had and gotten tuned I have liked alot however when I had the stage 4 bnr tuned by steve he said it was laggy! The stage 4 is a 60-1 compressor and a ptrim wheel machined into the stock hotside. I'm going to tell you that on most hybrids the limit seems to be around 17psi of boost so you probably don't have a hole lot more room to go but at 347 that is not bad at all for a hybrid setup.
