it seems to me that the G42-1200 Compact might be the safer bet
because the smallest 1.01 A/R turbine housing for the G42 is ~equal in exhaust flow potential to the G40’s largest 1.19 A/R housing. If you go with a G40 and the largest 1.19 housing, but then determine the housing is too restrictive/responsive, your only option is to swap the turbo out.
In addition to that, being on pump gas I’d probably suggest the G42-1200C with the mid-size 1.15 AR housing. There is a 1.28 A/R option above it. At least you have another choice in either direction. They only indicate the smallest 1.01 AR housing on the turbine map, but you can get those three choices in V-band or div T4.
The reason being, if you go to the 20B area I posted a video of a 20B billet engine dyno and they chose the G45 turbo for it. It made 700 whp on pump gas and around 950 or so on E85. It was a very conservative tune and likely could do more. A G42 with turbine housing options just seems more appropriate on pump gas to me than a G40. RobbeDahmed also has a youboob dyno video hitting 1000 whp overspeeding a G42-1450 1.28 A/R in the 30-35 psig range on E85.
Does seem the G42 will give greater flexibility, was thinking of the G42-1200 given the smaller unit size.
Need to reroute my A2w IC and likely get a new exhaust manifold to make it work either way. Would like to use a flow through style IC where the pipe across the front is now.

So I presume your saying turbine wheel weight makes no difference to EMAP or spool and you base all decisions based on flow?
no, I claim otherwise, and have done so many times on this very forum. What I’m showing there is the relationship between housings of different frame size.
Flow is respective to power potential. Weight is partially respective to response. Emap is to some degree respective to porting type. Yet these things overlap in many ways. It’s not as simple as you’ve tried to state. As in all things, the details matter.
