Good FD Single Turbo?

I have searched quite a bit, and I might just be a blind idiot.

But if anyone could enlighten me. I have a 93' Rx-7 FD R1 and it has the stock sequential twin turbos in it. But I was talking to the guy who drives the FD in Formula Drift. And he said that I should definatly switch to a single turbo, now I don't have a whole lot of expierience with turbos. As this is my first turbo charged car, but what are some good single turbos for an FD?

it depends on wat you are tryin to do drift, road race, or drag?

Also depends on how much power you'd like to have, and how big your wallet is.

AND it also depends on the kind of response you want or what kind of power band you're looking for.... does lag concern you... rx'7 are unique, they have a VERY broad range of turbo's they can use... it all depends on what you want from your turbo.
One other thing... for mild street driven power (300ish hp) twins are pretty good, just a hassle to track down problems.

We have many different set-ups available to suit your needs/wants. Give us a call, ask for Ryan.

I'm going for more road racing.

Lag isn't really an issue, but I'd like turbo to kick in around 4500RPMs.

If you dont have as much experience with turbos as you have stated, you are probably better off getting a 'kit' from a vendor such as a-spec. their kits are really nice too.

Apexi RX-6 might be a good choice for you, although i believe it spools faster than 4500. I've heard 400hp at 15psi should be relatively easy with the proper supporting mods and a good tune. No personal experience, but i'll be picking one up soon.

I ran my A-Spec 500R a few times on the road course last summer and was very happy with it. Good response for short/technical courses, but plenty of power for the courses with a little more speed built in.

I think the best overall turbo my personal preference would be gt35r. spools fast as hell and can make decent power best bang for your buck

Jumbogumbp 05-18-07 08:33 AM

I think the best all around turbo for road racing would be the a-spec 500r.... hands down.
I myself am running an r85, which is a good high power turbo but it's a light switch turbo, as in under 4500 rpms not much boost gained... between 4500 and 5500 it rockets up. The gt35r is a good choice too... I think Mike B is running a variation of that turbo and he's got the fastest street driven rx7 in colorado. I was planning on beating him with my r85 but he just got bridgeported and is making crazy power (550whp ish) with a sweet power band.

Thanks for all the help guys, I went and did a lil research on the Turbos y'all gave me, and after looking at specs and all that other shyt. I think I'll go With Garrett's GT35R.

I have one more question tho. How much of a pain in the ass is a sequential to Single swap, cuz I'd like to save money and do it myself, but if it's like a complete bitch I'd guess I'll let the professionals do it.

NOPR 05-20-07 03:30 AM

GT35R is a pretty sweet turbo as long as your goal isnt crazy max hp. its a great turbo for just about anything, and its been widely used so theres plenty of support if you dont know what you're doing.

anyone know anything good about the to4R kit from rx7 store??
