garrett s400?

Hi all,

im looking to move to a single turbo setup - currently running dual oil coolers, upgraded intercooler, twin sequential - running 327hp (fw) - which i estimate to be around 270rwhp

Im after around 375-425 rwhp with a safe setup

Obviously upgrading injectors
Fuel Pump
Looking at water injection (aquamist here in uk)
low boost if I can help it - I suppose lower boost is safer on the engine?

Want to prevent detonation and any problems with the engine for as long as I can

NOT LOOKING TO RACE
I do trackdays ONCE or TWICE a year

really more for road driving/racing in safe situations without speeding!
driveability not pure power is what i ultimately seek.

is the garret s400 suitable for my setup im looking towards?

Its specs are

Large alloy compressor housing with 6in inlet and 4in outlet. Rotatable 360deg housing with v-band clamp.
Massive 122mm 7 blade compressor wheel with 80mm inducer.
Oil cooled centre core with 360deg thrust bearing.
a/r 1.15 twin scroll turbine housing, both with T6 inlet flange and 5in V-band outlet flange. Rotatable 360deg housing with v-band clamp.
110mm 11 blade high flow turbine wheel.

given 425 max you want a turbo that makes approx 60 pounds per minute. there are a number of options...

Garrett GT3582r

Borg Warner S300 62

i have never heard of a Garrett S400. i do know of various Borg Warner S400s all of which are way, way, too much flow for your objectives.

Aquamist is an excellent option amongst the AI choices as are your current mods.

good luck,

howard

Thanks Howard.

Sorry I meant Borg Warner!

I'll take a look at those options.

Can't see an s300 62 anywhere

What does the 62 refer to?

Howard Coleman 05-11-14 01:29 PM

S300 62...

BW Part number

177272 radial output discharge
177280 90 degree discharge (towards the front)

BTW, the BW option is especially nice for the rotary as it has a larger turbine wheel...

the turbo comes w a 4.2 inch exhaust outlet. if you are buying it in the U S i suggest you consider Full Race as they offer a 3 inch conversion for $150. otherwise you will need to adapt 4.2 to your 3 inch exhaust... BTW, i am not affiliated w them and anyone else offering the same option is at the top of my list of vendors.

A ball bearing to4s 60-1 comp with a p-trim divided t4 e
xh, its cheaper then most turbos in its class (size and spool) and should meet your power goals, i made 407rwhp on a stockblock s4 @16 psi with full boost from below 4k rpm to 7500 without AI or anything and absolutly no sign of detonation, a 13b rew should be over 425 at the same boost!
U should also have earlier spool since u have a REW and i have my boost controll set so it starts to bleed the top port early so i dont build boost to quick.

forgot to say its streetported too.

What other mods would I look to need along side?

Clutch? Transmission (stock fd is good for 500hp?)

Suspension and breaks are uprated already.

What about a holset hx35?

I too have been snooping around looking for a turbo (while undecided between NA or boost for my FB) for around 400hp at 1bar and full boost by ~4000rpm and the BW300 62 (S362X) has been on top of my list with the twin scroll .91 a/r turbine and 90* compressor outlet... The price is awesome as well, $800 with 3" v band turbine now from full race ;)

My theory from previous (piston) builds is keep air temps down by running less boost to get your power levels once you can keep spool within acceptable range. Almost everywhere on the comp map this turbo is efficient for a 13b, and the twin inlet turbine with a well designed manifold should spool fast and hard at your desired boost levels and be very street able at low boost city driving. Good luck!
