Fucked my gearbox and tilton twin plate clutch disks!, THANX SINGLE TURBO!!!!

Just wanted to share with everyone how much fun! it is owning and driving a single turbo 13B producing 520bhp... My current combination lasted 7000km before my engine managed to destroy my input shaft bearing-shear my gearbox mount-wear the case hardening of 2,3,&4th gear! (re fucked!)-twist the spline on the input shaft on the gearbox-wear out the spline on one of my clutch plates- which lead to running most of the load thru one disk which cause every rivit & puck on the clutch plate to show stress cracks and the second plate to crack near the pucks!

So I bought a new (series 5 89-91 turbo box to replace the series 4 which is good now for a boat anchor, two new clutch disks, one new gearbox mount, one new spigot bearing, and a shit load of time and help from my friends at Ultimate tunes (In particular Mario, and Nick https://www.rx7club.com/ubb/smile.gif ) and hopefully my baby will be back better than ever.

All of the above was caused from shear power, not once in 7000km had I done a racing standing start just full power in mostly 2nd,3rd,4th, and 5th gear as could be seen from the gear tooth damage.

The moral 500+bhp rx7's are hard on components (even top quality parts!) and you better start saving your money for regular maintenance of your cars running gear...and god help you if you are aiming for more power, you either better get better driveline parts or start stocking your own spare gearboxes etc cause you will need them if you use your power on a regular basis like I do!

RICE RACING, are you saying that the 89-91 trans is stronger? I am in need of a trans to replace my clunky 87 box.

Are there any true (and reliable) 6-speed tranny conversions out there?

Something like a T56 would be nice.

Amen, brother!

Sorry to hear about all that damage, though.

MikeL, I will try to take some photo's for you and post them...the gear casing is much stronger (looks a lot different to the one we run) the bearings are much better, and I am not sure on the gear size/material etc but the bearing is the biggest problem and series 4 box's are renound for failing in this area + I was told that the series 5 runs smoother cause it has like a counterweight in it as well so I will see if this is true?...but yeas to look at it it looks stronger (same size externally)

Great! Thanks. I'm gonna buy a 89-91 box.

The 89 to 91 turbo trans are a little better because of the bearing design and also they come with a hamonic damper on the output/tail shaft so they can take more abuse at high speeds but the gears are the same design and suffer from the same weakness as the earlier models. The tail housings use a different design mount and they cannot be swap for the earlier one unless you remove the harmonic thingy on the tailshaft.

Same gear breaking then. I'll just get my '87 parts car trans rebuilt instead of my original one because the original one has many broken gears.

I was thinking about going single turbo to get 500+ HP, but is this driveline just not up for it? Is there any aftermarket trannys that can hold the power better or do you just have to live with the stock tranny breaking every so often?

personaly I think I will go with the tremic tko and see if I can find a bellhousing to match up if so hell ya go to 580 foot lb of torque not many rx7 make that even if the horse power is high, it is rare the torque is ever higher.

$9k? Is that all???
Shit... I'll take 2 then.
