External WG hook up to Boost controller?

I feel stupid asking but my tial didn't come with any instructions on how to hook up the lines. I've got a blitz SBC-ID and a Tial 40mm wastegate, how do i make the two "jive" togeather :)

Re: External WG hook up to Boost controller?

great boost controller... ill try to explain this as best as possible..

1. turbo outlet ---> bottom port of wastegate and "IN" on boost solenoid
2. boost solenoid "OUT" to top port on wastegate

on the sbc-id adjust boost through manual mode.. automatic mode doesnt respond well... adjust gain to as high as possible with out spiking

good luck!

so external wastegates dont require an outside singal to work? I didn't know they worked in a closed loop

I think with no imput they run just whatever the spring in it is set to but with the altering the aur press on the bottom one (i'm not to sure) that will trick to into opening/closing ealier/later.
Thats just a guess

Anyone else have any ideas on how to hook this thing up

Poweraxel 07-22-03 07:02 PM

as a-spec tuning said above.. thats the correct way to hose it up,,, i have the same boost controller also

cool beans then

Ok, i tryed it way you guys said and its opening as soon as the boost starts to build. I went online and found a copy of the oweners manual. It is saying that the IN port should connect to a vacuum/boost source. the OUT on the sol. connects to the top port on the wg and the bottom port on the wastegate connects to the compressor housing on the turbo.

this is going to be hard to do, my turbo compressor doesn't have a fitting on it. If i tap both these lines into the ic pipe right after the turbo would it work the same?

Here is a picture of what i believe you guys where saying to do (not one of my oringal works) http://www.devilmotorsports.com/wastegate-diagram.jpg

Here is the same picture changed around to show what the manual is talking about http://www.devilmotorsports.com/wast...gram-blitz.gif

Don't hook it up like the first picture. Boost will rise out of control since there will be pressure at the top port on the wastegate, and the control direction is wrong (boost will actually go up as the controller shuts off the solenoid to lower it). BOOM! The correct way to hook it up is to connect the boost pressure signal to the NC port (not shown in the picture) and connect the top of the wastegate to the COM port.

The second picture is correct, but you can just use one hose from the IC pipe and use a T if you want to.

It helps to understand how the wastegate works:
- pressure to the side port will open the wastegate
- pressure to the top port will hold it closed

The boost controller solenoid should:
- vent the pressure from the top of the wastegate normally
- apply pressure to the top of the wastegate when power is applied

Does it matter if the side port using post or pre-throttle body pressure source? If post TB then the side port would see vacuum but I guess this wouldn't matter because this would be at a point where the w/g should be held closed anyway?

So the solenoid (mine is a Profec B II) lets the pressure straight through to hold the w/g closed then when given the signal that boost has been met it bypasses the pressure source through the open NO port (unused 3rd point on solenoid).

Is this correct?

Also my Progate says it can be hooked up using only the side port and just venting the top port (like the way you would a stock actuator type w/g). I don't see how this would work since boost pressure could overcome the spring pressure alone right? Doesn't it need the pressure in the top chamber to help support the spring and hold it closed?

Thanks for the help, I've done a lot of searching and read through a lot of useless posts. All of this info needs to be archived with pictures hosted in a way so that they will always be viewable.

Actually after thinking about it further since the pressure would be equal above and below the diaphram this wouldn't assist the spring pressure in holding the piston closed. So I could save a bunch of lines and just hook it up like this:

pressure source (compressor housing) --> NO port

COM port --> side w/g port

top w/g port opened to atmosphere

My Progate instructions mention something about low speed high load instances where the dual port method is safer since it controls the difference of pre-TB pressure with post-TB pressure (or vacuum in this instance)

According to my blitz sbc-id instructions the "in" on the boost solinoid comes from the pressure source after the turbo, the "out" on the boost solinoid goes to the side of the wastegate, and then the top of the wastegate goes back to the pressure source. Thats the way I have it hooked up. Is that not correct?

so is it supposed tobe hooked up like this?

or like this Picture #2

crazyrx7 12-22-05 12:08 PM

I have mine set up like picture 2. And thats the way the blitz sbc-id instructions told me.

well Profec B II instructions say picture 1 is correct, but I'd like someone who knows the logic to reply and tell me if the pressure in the top cylinder helps to hold the w/g closed even though it has equal pressure below he diaphram.

This is from the greddy manual:

PhatManBUD 12-22-05 12:44 PM

we're all screwed!

4CN Air 12-22-05 12:55 PM

lol, I'll get to the bottom of it eventually, then post a correct diagram with the theory explained. First I need the questions in my above post answered though.

PhatManBUD 12-22-05 01:37 PM

u think by any chance, it just happens to vary depending on the boost controller?

crazyrx7 12-22-05 01:51 PM

I think it varies according to the boost controller type as well.

4CN Air 12-22-05 01:52 PM

no, I'm pretty sure the stepper motor is used in the same basic way on most electronic controllers. Maybe I'm confusing what is the IN and what is the OUT, but my way make sense to me. I'm thinking NC stands for noramlly closed and NO for normally open. But I'm pretty sure there are at least 3 different ways to setup an external gate and electronic boost controller. Well actually two main ways. One is the way i posted above, but the pressure source for the side w/g port could either come from the compressor housing (pre-TB) or UIM (post-TB) so I consider tis two options. The other option is to use the COM and NO ports and hook it up like you would an actuator for an internal gate, leaving the top w/g port open.

crazyrx7 12-22-05 04:26 PM

^^^I just looked at my instructions and your pic is correct. Now I have to crawl back under the car and change it.
