expensive turbo?... questions of a turbo noob
picking up this turbo that was custom built for a buddys project and never installed.
i'e got a few specs and was wondering if anyone could chime in and say yes or no. want to know what its capable of or what it even is? he measured everything in inches exhaust wheel: inducer 3" exducer: 2.5" 0.81 ar compressor wheel: inducer 1.75" exducer 2.25" (that's a guess as he didn't pull the housing} didn't get the size both housing are ported and polished and the exhaust side is set up for a v-band clamp he says it was built with garret parts for him and the builder ground off all markings so i have no idea what this thing is. looks awesome though. has anyone seen one or can anyone give me any advise? compressor trim would be around 60 if his standard measurements are right |

This was the box it was sent to him in after being built. Not saying for sure that this is how it started life. It's just a box. |
Also have the choice to grab a Borg Warner part number 171443. (T04e) with at 1.0 exhaust and at 0.5 compressor housing. Thoughts?
|
What car is it going on and how much power do you want to make?
EDIT: Those measurements look super weird dude. 76mm turbine wheel with only a 44mm compressor inducer? No thanks. Also with no markings it's entirely possible it's some piece of crap chinacharger. |
What are your power goals? What car was this turbo originally going to be used on? That compressor is tiny and probably not a good fit for a Rotary. There are quite a few Borg Warner turbos that are very cheap (in the 700 dollar range) and are incredible fits on a 2 rotor. Trying to get unknown mismatched turbos like this really do not make a whole lot of since.

so im almost positive the box wasn't the one for the turbo at this point. it was originally built for a local to support 350 for a 13b t. like i was saying he has a few turbos just laying around and the borg warner definitely caught my eye. I'd like to hit 300-350 on a 13b t. I know the borg is supposedly an oem diesel turbo replacement but... for the price. i'll get a better look once im back in town and go over the one that's been polished and see if i can find any sort of markings. as for now I guess we can talk about the borg.
|
You're definitely not going to hit 350 with that thing. The compressor wheel is like the size you would find in a GT2560r. I would just stop listening to that friend lol.
For the best bang for your buck try looking at a Borg Warner S200sx (7670) or an S360. |
Stupid question but last question. T04e Borg Warner 171433 he has new in the box with labels for 300. Is there anything it'd be good for even in the long run or would it be easy to flip?
|
T04e is a garrett designation, how can you buy a borg warner turbo with a garrett designation, they are completely different compressor and turbine designs?
|
I would stop believing what your friend tells you about the turbos he's trying to sell you. Buy something new, from a reputable source, and don't risk it.
Sounds like you're getting advice from an AutoZone check-out boy.. |
The Borg Warner 171443 is a clone of the garret made for oem diesel applications. Even on their site the 171443 comes up as oe diesel application replacement.

that turbo is also a bit small, maybe good for 300whp, and the hot side is too big and will be laggy
Borg Warner T04E17 questions - RX7Club.com |
It's got two other smaller exhaust housings if that would help on lag. Just trying to think. I want 350 to the flywheel or close to it. Not looking for anything super exciting. But lag is never fun.

you want an efr7670
|
or an EFR7163.. i would imagine it would be like crazy spooling BNR stage 3 on steroids
