Electronic v mechanical boost control
 

Are electronic boost controllers that much better than manual boost controllers for delivering earlier spool to warrant the fiddling around involved in tuning them?

Or is there an EBC on the market where you can just set desired target boost and be done with it? Preferably with high and low settings on an external switch.

The car is going in for final tune wednesday. Tdx61,s4/5 streetport, s5 rotors. And having trouble with existing ebc.(possibly faulty) so any input is valuable.

It depends a lot on the particular WG spring as to its rate and how "pre-compressed" it is in the closed position as to how much better you will build early boost with an electric controller. These days it is generally better to start with an ecu that can run all your ancillary devices so you don't have these problems.

Yeah thanks slides. Hes managed to get a really nice rough-in on the old mtx-8, eliminated the transition hiccupsthat always plagued it and is really smooth to drive for a fat arse rough tune so in the interest of saving near on a grand and a half and a rewire decided to keep it. This of course is after ordering a custom lt15 that took 4 weeks to not even be sent yet and thus cancelling the order.

Ill probably try the eboost street then, it only about 100 dollars more than the manual dual stage.

They are dual 40mm turbosmart wastegates btw, with 7lb springs, if that means anything to you. Holds 7lb boost rock solid with no boost control. Aiming for probably 15psi.

Is there enough of a performance difference to warrant the extra fiddling involved with the ebc?

what about just using heavier springs and no boost controller? Do you really need a high / low boost setting?

boost should come on quicker anyway (to a point), with the heavier springs as the gate wont start to open as quick..
I put 16psi springs in mine and plan to not run a boost controller

Yeah prolly not a bad idea re heavier springs, but i definitely need the high/low setting as its just an fb with limited tyres. On 7psi she spins 2nd all the way through on dunlop z1s and wont be running more than 15 psi on pump fuel so probably wouldnt go any heavier than a 10psi spring at this stage.
I am led to believe manual ball and spring controller will prevent creep and aid spool to an extent, am guessing with heavier wastegate springs could be pretty good?

you have to set the EBC right. there's also the factor of changes with the weather. An EBC might be able to compensate for that, but an MBC won't. A carefully adjusted MBC beats a poorly set EBC every time.
