Efini 99 turbo or BNR stage 3

I don't know if this is the right place to post this question. My twin turbo finally takes shit last weekend. Which turbo should I go for? I living in Cali so I can't go single. Please advise.

Search in the 3rd gen section. I'm running the 99s and they're pretty good.

Sherman, you can go single actually. There are a couple of single kits that allow you to keep your stock airpump. But if I were going to stay with the twins then I'd go with the BNR Stage 3's.

If he wants to pass a visual inspection at a legit station in CA he cannot go single turbo, period. If you pass a real test in CA with a single turbo you are either in a non-testing area (do those even exist?) or the person does not know what they are doing. The last few years most everyone I know with a rotary has automatically been getting sent to test only stations. This doesn't stop some of us though, ;)

It's not all that hard to find a "single turbo friendly" SMOG station though. At least not up in Sac. :) But if it really is that difficult in SoCal then I would still vote for the BNR stage 3's.

efini twins are basically new stock turbos, nothing special.

BNR 3s have much larger compressors and turbines and (run parallel) have a similar powerband to a Greddy T-78/Turbonetics T-66.

A lot depends on what you want to do with the car. Do you want quick spooling, 320 rwhp with a nice 3000-7500 powerband or laggier, 420 rwhp with a 4000-8000+ powerband? I am generalizing of course, but you get the idea.

Thanks for responding my thread everyone. Single is what I really want, but to deal with smog every 2 years that is a lot of work. Specially to find some test only center will close their eyes and just pass you is even harder. I am not looking for 500+ hps just enough to smoke some Honda kid. lol. I think I will stay with BNR stage 3. Questions to goodfellaFd3s or everyone. I think the highest boost I will run is 15 psi. What else should I upgrade? What kind of number can I expect out the BNR stage 3?

BNR stage 3's cant put out the HP a T78 can. If you’re going to go with the stock configuration the BNR’s you will be lucky to hit anything over 400hp, without replacing them once a year. Do some searches and see if you can’t find more then a handful of people that went that direction and put down those numbers.

I would compare the BNR's with a GT35 , or the Apexi 6, similar spool up and similar HP range. Not to rip on BNR but people have been attempting to improve stock twins for years. I put down 350 with a set of BNR stage 2’s so they do work, but it’s really about what HP goals you have.

I guess my question for you, is what are you going to do with the car? And what is your budget? Once you start to beef the HP in these cars you better plan to improve your brakes, suspension and the other typical systems that fail on 3rd gens.

15psi - stock turbos= mistake

Might want to check out rynberg's setup. He is in CA also and just passed smog with those turbos and a mild streeport running a high flow cat.

15psi is a fair amount of boost. Its the max recommended for stock and 99 turbos if you want them to last a reasonable amount of time. The BNRs will handle that amount of boost more efficiently from what I've read.

To run 15psi, you'll need larger secondary injectors (bore out the stock 850s to 1300s), a larger intercooler, a better clutch, VERY good tuning, possible an ignition amplifier. Maybe some other stuff.

You can make low 300s on 99s or BNRs pretty easily at 10 or 12 psi.

Thanks alberto mg!

I have to disagree with you on a few points :).

You mention 'bnr stage 2' so maybe that is where the misunderstanding is----the older style BNRs just had upgraded compressor wheels. The newer BNR3s have totally new CHRAs: compressor, shaft, turbine, the entire rotating assy. They are basically new turbos, no need to replace them once a year. I have had mine for almost 2 years and they are as good as new.

Steve Kan (who has tuned many of these cars over the years) mentioned that in power delivery, rwhp and also torque the new 3s run parallel are almost identical to a Greddy T-78. Difference being, you can run more boost on the T-78. The BNRs are good to 19-20ish psi, per bryan the owner of BNR.

Also, I made 366 rwhp at only 13 psi, and 421 at 17. There is no way stock twins or efini 99s will make that kind of power.

To answer the thread starter, at 15 psi I believe I made 385ish rwhp.

Did BNR ever get their website back up and running again? Or do you still need to call Bryan to get details? Thanks.

Here is a great link that should answer all questions, plus it has lots of side by side comparison pics :)
