which bw is that? and have picture how you extended the manifold?

dont remember the car is still in dallas getting work done for a larger exhaust. I need to stop adding things and finish it.

Brett:
I still have some port work just no where near as aggressive. As mentioned before I was daily driving the rx7 until the turbo oil seals gave out completely. Probably took more time to clean all the oil from the intercooler pipes and the spray from the bov then the fab work for the extra injectors into the uim and manifold.

Back on topic, even if my ebay manifold crack somewhere not a big deal just reweld it lol. the greddy manifold on for my rx8 was cracked getting cast welded is more of a pain having to get the metal up to temp for the weld then cooled down slowly

Yeah, I could imagine it being a nightmare to clean the intercooler...

Was it cheaper to go with the ebay manifold and pay labor then buying a name-brand manifold? Just curious as I would guess it was still significantly less.

czar 10-24-11 12:30 AM

let say we didnt have to worry about lack of premix lol.

for matts case on the hks turbo the cheap manifold was perfect chopping off the t4 for a vband isnt that much labor, And repairing a crack is around $30 so it can crack a whole lot before he meets a break even point. His hks is very compact. Even though its larger then mine the physical size is alot smaller.

For me the bw was to large of a unit to easily fit due to how thick the housings are and how close to the engine that manifold puts the turbo. Had to shave the exhaust housing slightly to get a good clearance. Another issue was my 50mm synapse waste gate is a very large unit compared to matts units (forgot what it was , low profile like the tial but wasnt a tial). Another issue is that matts car is built to be able to run that turbo of his all the way out where as i only have two densos to feed the 6 injectors vs his 3 . so waste gate flow is more important to me at being able to keep the boost down which is another reason the waste gate runners were reworked.

if your running a regular size turbo then this isnt a issue, i blame matt lol

we keep saying ebay, but there are different versions out there lol. Me and matt used the same person for ours though.

Wanted to give you all a quick update on my Ebay manifold and wastegate. Did a Track day at Nashville super speed way. 20 psi with a to4b. in my 4th 20 min session my car formed a massive exhaust leak and I had to end for the day. I thought I was going to have to admit defeat with the ebay parts but to my surprise all it was is a manifold to turbo gasket. I was running it pretty hard so I think its an ebay part success, you can probably find a few of my laps on youtube.

bufferovrflo 11-03-11 04:37 PM

Did you use the ebay gasket or OE?

Frostycrowd 11-07-11 12:43 PM

Not sure where Gasket came from, I had a stockpile over the years. it was the layered gasket.

C. Ludwig 11-07-11 04:15 PM

Check the flange on the manifold before you put it back together. Smart money would be on a warped flange and that allowing the gasket to blow. If it's the good turbo gasket, those don't just come apart for no reason.

Frostycrowd 11-09-11 12:32 PM

Flange is flat, checked as always before gasket. 90 percent sure the bolts came loose then gasket blew, I was able to remove all bolts by hand. I should of checked all that before posting the gasket sucked.

The t4 flange I have on there was made of some metal that is claimed to not warp as well. It was all the local shop had so I am not sure if they were just making it up but it was like 40-50 bucks. I can not remember the name of the metal for the life of me.

I just got a new larger 1.32 A/R divided t4 turbine housing for my t04r and I ported out the openings of the t4 flange on the turbine housing to better match up to my manifold with the D-shaped turbine flange, see pics attached. It turned out pretty good I think. This way I figure it should flow good, it would have alot of obstruction to the flow coming out of the d shaped manifold ports to the normal t4 flange if I did not port out the turbine housing flange.

I wonder if this will not flow quite as good as normal t4 divided flanges? I figured it can't be too bad, and it was easier and cheaper than replacing my manifold which seems to be working out just fine. Only cost me $13 for a die grinder kit from harbor freight! I wanted the large A/R for drag racing, hopefully pick up some more top end power especially with high boost.

Before I had a undivided turbine housing along with a gasket that was all port matched, now I'm gonna have to port match a new divided t4 gasket or if that doesn't work out I'll have to use my old open undivided t4 gasket that matches the ports, but I assume it would be best to make the divided gasket match up and work good.

JZG 11-30-11 04:23 AM

I'm assuming the un-divided housing is a .96? If it is don't expect the 1.32 to make more power. I did a back to back test with a 62-1 on a mild port TII engine. Changing from the 1.32 to the .96 spooled the turbo 500rpm earlier, made 10hp less in the mid-range, and made 20hp more at the top end, and held the power for 2 hundred rpm more. Surprising huh? I was. The manifold was un-divided however so it could be different in your case with your manifold.

One added benefit of the exercise was no more cracked turbine housing divider to worry about (the reason the housing was changed in the first place). It cracked enough to just touch the turbine wheel, and it happened in a fairly short period of time (drift car).

tom94RX-7 11-30-11 10:09 AM

Ya its a .96 undivided. I would think in your case the loss of top end power is due to the obstruction of flow going into the divided housing coming out of the undivided manifold. I don't foresee that being a problem in my case now, and from all the research I've done it should be better for high boost and peak power with the larger a/r and now that its all divided maybe the spool time won't be much slower, we'll see. Thanks

only nice stainless tig welded manifold ive seen on ebay is crom a company called nukin. its not a cheap ebay manifold, but it looks like good quality . vband wastegate , and each manifold is hand made and welded(with what looks like a good weld) and has lifetime warrenty. but most of the others seem to be made cheaply.

I blew my gasket as well. I am having a really hard time finding a replacement for the D shaped port gasket. Does anyone know where to get them?

tom94RX-7 12-29-11 07:11 PM

T4 (T04) Divided Turbo Gasket - THICK *STAINLESS STEEL* on ebay works good, I'm using it. The portsin the gasket are a little enlarged and it fits the d shaped ports ok. With this gasket, a 1.32 a/r divided turbine housing and 4" exhaust, turbo spool up is better than before I made these changes.

These won't blow out. We don't sell them in divided. I never ever run divided turbo gaskets, even on full twin scroll setups. You would never ever be able to notice any difference in spool/power etc from not having a divided gasket..

Iwan 12-30-11 07:57 AM

Greddy sells one of the best gasket I ever used. Available as devided gasket as well.

fyi, the obx manifold works perfectly with the downpipe rx7store.net offers,

if your piecing a turbo kit together, id look into this setup, cheap and seems to be good quality

patman 06-19-12 11:15 AM

Update, I forgot about this thread, but a couple of months ago I was having exhaust leak issues, pulled the manifold off and sure enough, the flange was warped. There went another couple hours fly cutting it flat and re-installing it. It is sealed up pretty well now though. Hopefully when I get the rest of the car set up a little better I can do a dyno comparison between this manifold and the one I will be making.

i ran an obx one as well with no problems

Jason 07-09-12 08:51 AM

Most of the problems I have seen from OBX manifolds come from the flanges. They warp from the heat over time.
